Hello guys I Have a extra Computer i use for a lan server when i can I want to move the OS over to luinx as it uses less memory and is more stable then windows and can be left on for years with no rebooting needed updates are painless ect... And i want to learn more about luinx, networking, maybe codeing(Eh kinda not to high on my list) But i want something thats easy to start with Currently i use it with SCRDS TS3 Minecraft lan server ftp backupserver for files I use teamviewr right now to connect - i want to get used to no gui if i can but still have it if needed I was thinking about CentOS but im unsure Also how can i keep windows installed incase i need it for a game that might not have luinx installed ( i always fail at setting it up right and just end up installing over the whole drive ) My specs as of right now are - would luinx be a good thing for me to use ? can i expect some better prominence ? Operating System MS Windows XP Media Center Edition Professional 32-bit SP3 CPU Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 0.13um Technology RAM 512MB Dual-Channel DDR @ 166MHz (2.5-3-3-7) Motherboard Dell Computer Corp. 02Y832 (Microprocessor) Graphics Default Monitor @ 1024x768 64MB GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X (nVidia) Hard Drives 59GB IC35L060AVV207-0 (PATA) 28 °C Optical Drives HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8481B NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A
It's linux, not lunix. I wouldn't worry about losing the gui, once you get used to the command line it's really useful. You can keep the UI if you want to but I'd recommend against it. The windowmanager + desktop environment adds a lot of potential vulnerabilities and wastes resources. I've used ubuntu server in the past when I was new to linux, I found that pretty easy to setup.
I second Ubuntu Server. Always works great for me.
gonna have to say debian for this one

Just install OpenSSH and use something like Putty to connect to it if your using a Windows PC. Follow the directions to install it. Ubuntu Server is pretty straightforward. And no, your not going to get free CDs (burnable ones anyway). You might be able to request for a CD from the distro's website. But that can take a considerable amount of time.
The free CDs take 6-8 weeks to come.

And in case you miss installing something, don't worry. Just like in ubuntu, you can use the apt-get command to install stuff. Don't forget to run it with sudo though!
Thank you :3 This place has always been so kind and helpful! [editline]4th November 2010[/editline] Ok so i have it installed ion a vm and im loged in What the hell do i do now to get everything installed and working? SCRDS: mkdir srcds cd srcds wget http://storefront.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin ./hldsupdatetool.bin Type yes and press enter Access it just like on Windows with ./steam Like ./steam -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir .
Like ./steam -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir .
Yay stringly typed! I always hated how you had to type in the long version of the game's name with capitalized letters and arbitrary hyphens. Why not just use css instead of "Counter-Strike Source". Valve is dumb. IIRC they even have an inconsistency between the full stringly typed name for L4D 1 and 2.
As far as I know, Counter-Strike Source is the only one with a retarded name. So it's a bit weird.
Ubuntu Server, imo. Also, 'lunix'. Haha, nostalgia
