[QUOTE]Two 14-year-old girls were electrocuted Monday morning in rural Tampico, and eight others were hurt in the accident that happened while they were detasseling. Dead are Hannah Kendall and Jade Garza, best friends who would have been freshmen at Sterling High School this fall.
Authorities wouldn’t reveal the names, ages or sexes of the other workers, who likely also were younger than 18. They worked for Monsanto Corp.
The accident happened in a cornfield on Luther Road south of Starr Road shortly before 9 a.m. At the time, 72 detasselers were assigned to the farm. The girls and two other crew members came in contact with a field irrigator, and they received an electrical shock as a result, according to the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department. Several others also reported feeling the shock.
The four were immediately taken to CGH Medical Center in Sterling, where the girls were pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Department and Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald said. The third crew member was in critical condition and was taken by helicopter to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. The fourth was admitted to CGH for observation, a sheriff’s news release said.

I just learned that those irrigating systems with each wheel has it own motor and the electricity is multiplied by each wheel so they were pretty far out there.
This also hit me kinda because my sister is detassling(For Pioneer) and I did it last year aswell.

DEAR GOD...I just found out that one of the girls that died may of actually caught on fire, CHRIST!
More notches for Monsanto Corp
Damn that does sound pretty sad, I'm from chicago too.
Actually I am from the area around Chicago, near aurora to be exact.
A couple of my friends are detasseling for Monsanto, they say they aren't allowed breaks. Many of them end up throwing up or getting heat stroke on the field because of it. How haven't they been called out yet?
Christ, what a way to go. Surprised field irrigators could do such a thing. These Monsanto guys sound like real jerks with their policies.
Sheesh, I'm glad I didn't take that detassling job :tinfoil:
I live in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
That is sorta close to me
I feel bad for them
How does the field irrigation work? How could they be electrocuted?
I don't know this farming stuff :(
What the fuck is detassling.

They spray water around.
They got electrocuted by ether water on the ground from resent storms, or they touched an exposed wire(Mind that there is a ton of electricity going through this system.)

Detasseling corn is removing the pollen-producing flowers, the tassel, from the tops of corn (maize) plants and placing them on the ground. It is a form of pollination control, employed to cross-breed, or hybridize, two varieties of corn.
Wikipedia copy pasta.
I'm happy and surprised to see many Illinois-bros around here.
I'm from that shithole Waukegan.
That's less then 2 hours away from me.

So the irrigation sprayed on something electrical? I assume they were detassling by hand not using one of those super fancy vehicles.
I guess the heads at Monsanto are desperate to keep their title of world's #1 human rights abuser.

I'd love to detassel her.

We have had some nasty storms recently and I am guessing that the storm blew out some wires or something and the rain gave it a nice puddle for them to step in, also if it was a vehicle it would not have gone close to one because those tractors are solid steel.

That implys ripping out her ovaries.
I live in Plainfield, IL (because that's really important)
the only work that the minors can get around here is detassling corn, and it's actually really dangerous

Corns all we got anyways.

Taking the flowering plants off of the corn, and doing that for hours
Being electrocuted is probably one hell of a way to go.
R.I.P.
From Pekin, Illinois here. Detasseling corn is possibly one of the most dangerous jobs around here and most teens/adolescents do it every summer here.
Macomb here, tons of people do it, it pays $1200 for 2 weeks of work.
Montsanto drops another level on the scale of morality, bet they failed a safety protocol.
I live in Orland Park, IL
Most people around here are too rich to know what detasseling is, I tried it once. I'm way too much of a wimp for it.
What the hell does 'detasseling' even mean?
[editline]27th July 2011[/editline]
Pardon me but I'm Finnish, and Google translate doesn't find a finnish match for the word 'detasseling'
[editline]27th July 2011[/editline]
But I guess the girls went out with a bang.

Oh, the informative post
Monsanto just sounds like one of those terrible faceless corporations. They're pretty much like Weyland Yutani from the Alien series.
