TOKYO — Sega Sammy Holdings, the parent company that now controls one-time video gaming pioneer Sega, is looking to seriously overhaul its structure and business operations. Statements from the conglomerate have stressed that this is an ongoing process, but one of the first steps seems to be Sega ditching the console video game business to focus on what it considers the areas of biggest growth, mobile and online PC games.
http://www.japantoday.com/category/arts-culture/view/fans-mourn-segas-exit-from-the-console-video-game-market Whelp, I guess it was a long time coming. Hopefully they'll be able to cling to life by using smaller teams and reviving their cult classics on Steam. Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of confidence that they'll do anything remotely innovative or risky. The spirit that drove the company during the 90s has had its back broken several times over now.
No wonder they are really bad at sticking to one concept/console. like... really bad. it's screwed them over a multitude of times. V Some cool sega history V dreamcast Genesis 3 game gear the 1983 video game crash they once outdid Nintendo. But their lack of optimism caused Nintendo to dominate them instead. It really hurt them.
Rip. Won't be seeing a new Sonic game in awhile I guess.

I wish Nintendo would buy the Sonic IP.
I wish Nintendo would buy the Sonic IP.
If you understood the history between Mario and Sonic you'd understand why this will never happen Nintendo had Mario Sega had Sonic... and boy, did sonic SELL consoles. It made them pretty damn rich. Without sonic they wouldn't have even gotten close to where they got. in fact, you wouldn't hear "Sega is leaving consoles", because they would have probably left consoles in the 80's/90's.

It was just wishful thinking because of the current events. Sonic back in the day was amazing (apart from some obvious exceptions).
western pso2 and pc yakuza ports seem likely now
I honestly don't think so. Sega honestly seems to belive that there is no market for either Phantasy Star or Yakuza in the west. What this means is that we'll probably see more free to play microtransaction ridden cowclickers.
Translation:they are moving to the free to play market Expect mmos and f2p games for your phone [editline]2nd March 2015[/editline] With micro transaction up the ass
jet set radio future on steam fucking when? you can't even emulate it because it's on the xbox
I really hope this comes true some day.
What will this mean for Atlus?

Sonic Boom was their last chance I guess
he did it guys, he brought sega down. if it weren't for those damn blue arms...
Well I don't think it is that out there considering Sonic has been in the last two SSB games Like, you could make an argument for Snake showing up in brawl being that there is real metal gear history on nintendo consoles But sonic? its clear they were open to including their platform rival mascot from the 90's
I mean, Sonic has had a ton of exclusives on Nintendo platforms, too, as well as crossovers with Mario for the Olympics. However, I doubt that Sega would get rid of pretty much the only franchise they have that can internationally sell consistently unless they were desperate.
Is it really Sega Sammy Holdings? Because if it weren't for that kid on youtube I'd believe it, but with that in mind...
I wish Nintendo would buy the Sonic IP.
Don't see why this is getting dumbs. Sega seems to employ lobotomized monkeys with stump-hands to make Sonic games. See Sonic 06, Sonic boom... Even the better Sonic games of late like Generations were more "meh it was a game" than "WOAH AMAZING". Every Nintendo first-party game is at least passable and mostly bug free. Nintendo buying the Sonic IP would be a great thing for the consumer.
RIP Total War and Dawn of War 3?
RIP Total War and Dawn of War 3?
Total War won't be negatively affected by the change. Hell, I would'nt be surprised if Creative Assembly gets more funding. Although, The pressure to churn out games as fast as possible will probably also increase.
RIP Total War and Dawn of War 3?
They said they're focusing on PC. Total War and Dawn of War are PC games. What are you doing?
Sega isn't abandoning consoles. The Japan Today article comes from a mistranslation of the refocusing press release.
