I'm sick of working at places like McDonald's for slave wages. Over my time of browsing Facepunch, I've noticed that quite a lot of the members here have very nice, well paying jobs, and I'm wondering what they do to obtain them.
I'm very interested in computers, and I wanted to do graphic design for quite awhile, but tons of people are saying it's impossible to get a job in the field.
I was thinking about going to college for about 2 years. What advice would you give me?
Do you have any after school qualifications? Many professional jobs will require you to have bachelors or diploma qualifications at the least. If you don't yet, then you'll need to be patient.
If you want to slowly work your way up you should consider traineeships (this is for Australia, I'm not sure if the rest of the world has things like these). Traineeships are pretty much taking a step in to the field your interested in; while you do your traineeship you're pretty much an assistant and at the very bottom of the ladder but you get paid for the work you do while also working towards a qualification simultaneously. I myself am currently looking for traineeships in Business Administration so I can get secure income (casual work fucking sucks when you have to support yourself), work experience in a relevant field for me, and if I finish a traineeship I'll also get a Certificate III which is pretty useful and would complement my Bachelors in Business and Commerce very well.
I don't really have any success stories except for a job as a process worker at a chicken processing plant. It was $25 an hour though, so if you want tonnes of money fast then always look for labouring jobs in primary and secondary industries, it's shit work but good money. Some don't require you to have any prior qualifications or experience.
In what way are you interested in computers? While it's always good to get a job doing what you love, IT guys these days are a dime a dozen.
If you have no qualifications you are going to have a shitty job with little pay, unless you are a pretty girl and can get a position as a waitress.
I buy iPhones and other trendy tech in bulk and then re-sell them in my country. Cheaper than in our extremely overpriced stores, but still for a lot more than I paid for them. Making a pretty good living, laughing at those who sit on their asses, doing nothing, and believing that you can't find a good income these days. Be creative ;)
