Too many WWII plane games. Need WWI or futuristic ones.
Need WWI
Rise of flight bro. The only WW1 flight sim you'll ever need.
Agreed.
Disagree. Modern/future air combat is boring as fuck.
Someone who obviously hasn't played Ace Combat or actually knows that modern dog fighting still mainly uses its guns.
They tried missles only in Vietnam, didn't work.

What the fuck are you smoking. Why do you even THINK that fighter jets of today mainly use their on-board cannons, missiles ARE the first line of attack in these things, freaking guns are the last avaible option for when either the combat is taking place at extreme close range or when you have run out of missiles.
ANY small search for modern air combat would reveal this. :v:

I said dog-fighting....dog fighting occurs when two jets are within gun range but if one tries to escape it will be brought into missile range. The best thing wuold be to look at Vietnam and even then, US airplanes weren't fitted with guns so they were at a severe disadvantage. The only thing that made up for it was their skills were better than their Vietcong counterparts.
Also, we haven't had real air combat since World War II.
Also just a note, the only futuristic flight sims I've seen are mods and Star Wars battlefront.

Fair enough, your post made it seem like jets preferred to use their guns over missiles.
Problem is, dog-fighting is something that almost never occurs these days, what with missiles having insane range and all.
I stand corrected.

Doesn't happen.
The only use the cannons see today are ground strafing, and that largely only comes from the A-10.
Modern aircraft are too expensive and too fast to engage inside cannon range reliably. Cannons are no longer even being mounted on some aircraft. As it stands they are still attached for shooting down slow moving unarmed fixed wing aircraft, and helicopters. In the unlikely event that a lock cannot be obtained on an enemy aircraft, then they may close to gun range, but due to the limited amount of ammunition carried, you are likely still going to need a lock, which you still might not be able to obtain.
So no dog fighting does not occur. Pilots/aircraft are too valuable to risk for such frivolous actions.
Are these games only best played with a joystick?
Obviously yeah.
It's very much possible to keyboard fly though. Difficult, but not impossible.

360 controllers are good to for the arcadey ones, not the simulator ones though.

Also to the little chat above, do they even train pilots to dogfight with guns anymore?

Is this right? Everywhere else says it at least needs a 2.66 dual core...
For those who think beyond-visual range missiles make all other forms of air combat redundant or obsolete, give this a read:

Eh arcade combat. Pass.
I don't get why they release a game at seperate dates depending on where you live.
"Heh, we're going to only release it in x and then release it in y a month later when it failed to gain popularity, that should boost our sales!"

Thanks TAC.
I couldn't remember what the file name was but thats what I was referring too.
Airplane combat games usually fall into one of two categories:
a) So arcadey that it's a joke.
b) Overblown realistic that you have to have a university degree to fucking do anything.
I think Ace combat falls right in between IMO.
[editline]16th July 2011[/editline]
Actually, It is arcadey but its not stupid.

It actually is engaging on some levels, you can hear the comm chatter of enemy units and planes.
It feels really smooth and and fun while still being somewhat realistic. Its the 100+ missiles that throw that out the window though.
In Ace Combat, you launch more missiles in a single mission than pilots do so in their entire careers. :v:

But your pilot is a superhuman that can take ridiculous G forces from insane maneuvers. As much as I love AC, it's arcadey not even close to realistic in any way.
Why one month for North America? :gonk:

That's why I loled when I saw one of the trailers for Assault Horizon and heard some yell, "GOD DAMMIT! FIRE EVERYTHING!"

True, although personally those maneuvers just feel very odd to me.
