Firefighters and police were chasing calls across Ottawa-Gatineau early Wednesday evening after a severe thunderstorm rolled through the region, producing strong winds, torrential downpours, flashes of lightning and loud claps of thunder.
In Gatineau, a multi-storey apartment building on Chemin de la Savane was hit by lightning. A fire ignited and by the time firefighters arrived, the apartment's roof had blown off, landing on a house nearby. That house is intact but the roof of the apartment building is draped over the home.
One person was hit by part of the roof, but was not injured. He told CTV Ottawa he was lucky to be alive.
Fire officials say 30 people live in the apartment and are now homeless. The Red Cross will help them find a place to stay.
Environment Canada put many parts of the region under a severe thunderstorm warning late Wednesday afternoon. The warning covered areas from Belleville to Kingston, spreading east to Brockville and Ottawa-Gatineau.
The storm produced large hail, strong winds and heavy rain. There are widespread reports of downed trees across the region.
In Ottawa, there is flooding on St. Joseph Boulevard, Orleans Boulevard and other streets in the east end. Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex in Orleans is also closed due to flooding.
Hydro Ottawa reported widespread power outages late Wednesday afternoon. About 4,000 customers – mostly in the east end – remained without power at about 5:30 p.m. [/quote]

I actually enjoy thunder storms.
They are quite exciting, and the sound of rain makes me feel kind of calm and relaxed for some reason.
When it gets to the point where it is a serious danger though it is a little much.

I acually plan on going down to tornado alley during storm season some day to help out with a storm-chasing crew as a camera guy tbh. As for this one I didn't realise it was this severe, where I was there was basically a lot of rain and thunder pretty much with the occasional gust of wind. The most it did for us was knock out the power for a couple of hours, that's about it really.
I miss Ontario.
I'm In mid southern Ontario, near Barrie, all we got was loud thunder, wind wasn't very severe, only last around 30-60 minutes.
get this three times a month here
To be honest, this seems like the average thunderstorm here in Tennessee.
