• Upgrading server from Ubuntu to Xubuntu

So I've been thinking about upgrading my server with xubuntu. The thing that is concerning me is that do I have to make all the necessary server management tasks such as installing apache and all that if I upgrade to xubuntu without formatting the hard drive? If you need to make all the changes from scratch, how about upgrading my current Ubuntu with the most recent version of ubuntu? Do I need to make any changes or are all my files and configurations saved? Answers please.
Switching from Ubunto to Xubuntu isn't an upgrade. The only change would be the desktop environment (from Unity/GNOME to Xfce) If you want a lighter weight distribution for your server, I'd go with Debian or a stripped down Fedora with Xfce.
