It actually looks pretty neat for a machine's work. Although the guy in the painting looks a little out of it.
I've dreamed for years of computers crafting new images. How awesome would it be to do a 'similar images' search on Google except have it manufacture images instead?
Give it a couple of years, we'll probably have a public program that does just that.
I would love a program that could replicate a person artwork in a completely different style. It would be interesting to see how different people could have painted the same painting.
This is a really cool idea.

That just looks like stylized images ran through a photoshop filter that uses the same set of colors, not creating something new imo
Great, now robots are going to take artist's jobs too.

also it exists for music as well http://artsites.ucsc.edu/faculty/cope/5000.html
Och boy. Now if only it would be possible to invent machine that paints those images with real oil paint. "Google (becuase it's obvious they will buy it), paint me http://deviantart.com/inflation+vore+furry+tompreston.png in Rembrandt's style then send it to my adress."
Deep Dream and such is really cool. I had a picture of myself be mimicked in the style of Van Gogh, turned out pretty rad. Got it done on http://deepart.io/
"computer, give me a Picasso of my erect penis"
i'm confused, you just want a picaso then?

But humans didn't decide the final look and feel of the final portrait - they simply chose algorithms based on their efficiency and let the computer come up with the finished result. Finally, a 3D texture for the painting was applied based on the height and depth of paint applied to Rembrandt's works. As this was 3D-printed, artists's brushstrokes themselves could be mimicked in the final product.
^ i think he's talking about a computer program that would model the painting stroke by stroke, building an actual painting like a human would, but much quicker and near identically each time
