Slated to helm Spider-Man 4, director Sam Raimi walked away from the project earlier this year. He is currently working on something that could very well be bigger. Much bigger. It was made public last summer that Sam Raimi has signed on to bring Blizzard's massively multiplayer online game to the silver screen as "Warcraft". In late 2008, Raimi expressed interested in World of Warcraft saying it would make a "brilliant movie". In a recent interview, Raimi has provided an update on the Warcraft picture. "It's still a long ways away," says Raimi. "It's only a 40 page story." Raimi has brought in scribe Robert Rodat to pen the screenplay. Rodat is best know for writing Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot. We're finding the characters, and through the characters we are finding the story," says Raimi. "We're just trying to create realistic characters that can live in the World of Warcraft as if you were in the game itself in one or two of those environments and see the interaction of those great, mythic iconic characters." Raimi explains that visual world Blizzard created has drawn him into the project. "I love the visual world that the guys at Blizzard have created. It's incredibly, engrossingly terrifying and exciting. And I like their use of scale, the giant monsters they have. I love the different landscapes that your character can move through. I like the first person interaction you have with other players online. There are so many aspects about the game that I really enjoy — like the battles, doing sword battles. I like performing spells, learning new spells and getting to the next level like everyone else." He gushes that he "loves" the game. The director recounts a story of his Level 29 Shaman that was accidentally deleted. "And now," he adds, "I've worked a new character up to 71 — 72, sorry." He says he's not into power leveling — that is a Level 72 he did himself. "I've spent that many days in The World of Warcraft." But will this movie be all in the world or will it have people playing Warcraft characters? "It would be taking place within the World of Warcraft," says Raimin. "It's all in the world." And it is such a huge world! It must be a daunting task trying to bring it to live in movie form. "There are so many characters in the game. Trying to pull most exciting and different characters. "It is so overwhelming. You know, it really is a world. A universe — worlds, in fact. And so many characters and so many different professions, I don't think we could touch upon them satisfactorily. So we are trying to chose the ones that are interesting and could play a part in a drama that is slowly developing."
A Director that actually plays the game. Wonderful!
I get the feeling it's just going to be a stream of the director playing for two straight hours. WoW fans will love it.
Rodat is best know for writing Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot.
Most important nugget of info in that entire quote, right there. Was about to say you can't make a movie out of an MMO, and then I read that. I'll put my trust in him.
Blah, they shouldn't make it WoW-related. I'd much rather see a movie about WC3, that game was brilliant, and had a great storyline and characters too. Heck, even warcraft 2 or 1 would make better movies than WoW.

This article has increased my optimism towards this film.
It would be cool to have a Warcraft movie if it was done right. I think it would have both an Alliance hero and a Horde hero, and their stories sort of collide. Since, you know, you had the Horde and Alliance campaigns in the Warcraft series and you can choose between making a horde character or an Alliance character in WoW.
I read that the story is set one year before World of Warcraft and will primarily told from the Alliance's point of view.
The Forsaken are where it's at. :colbert:
I like this, but somewhere far away I believe they should also tackle the Warcraft series. But if they do WoW correctly, it should be weaved into it.
Every CGI scene i've ever seen in a Warcraft game has been great. Sam Raimi is a good director and he has actually played the game, I have high hopes.

It's going to be live action. Something like 300.
The first warcraft really had no story... at least thats relevant to anything in current warcraft universe
There wasn't any story when it was released, but by WC3 Blizzard wrote the story for WC1, and it's pretty cool.

I was reading up on the WC1 storyline on wowwiki and thinking "Holy shit, I don't remember the game having a storyline this deep." Then I went back and played again and thought "Oh, it didn't." What they've done with the WC1 story is pretty good though.
It's going to be live action. Something like 300.
Proper live action? Or will they weave a heap of CGI into it like in Avatar? That would be cool :buddy:
I don't think they have that huge of a budget anyways!
I hope they do the type of cinematics that Blizzard makes with their openings to WoW and the expansions.
I'm betting it'll be shit. If it isn't shit, I'll... well, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
I'll keep my eyes open and hopes down.

Raimi is a pretty new in terms of directing big movies but he did quite well on the movies he has done so far, with Rodat on screenplay too the movie could turn out to be quite decent.
Raimi is a pretty new in terms of directing big movies.
Spider-Man trilogy.
I hope the film will be long and have sequals. I don't think a 90 min long film would be enough for a Warcraft-themed movie.
Only bandwagoning idiots think this can't be a good movie. The Warcraft universe has more than enough lore for a movie, if not a bunch of movies.
I would prefer a Diablo movie though. But with either, I think it would be better as a mini-series kinda like The Stand. It's too long for one movie.
who wants to watch some guy running in a cave for 90 minutes
Yeah, you're right! Let's make a movie about a dwarf killing boars for about 30 mins, then travelling to another city and killing wolves for about 60 mins. No but seriously, a Diablo film would be quite cool too if they manage to get the hole dark, mystiqual, legendary hell feeling.

Am I the only one who would like a full CGI movie made by Blizzard themselves? I mean, the WoW Openings for the main game and expansions took my breath away.
