[release]We report on a lot of recalls, and most are seemingly innocuous defects that require the solar system to perfectly align before anything catastrophic could happen. Then there are recalls like this one for the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic that appear to be much more dangerous than they probably are.
It turns out that Chevrolet let a few Sonics built between June 2 and November 21 leave its factory in Orion Township, Michigan minus a brake pad. General Motors claims that of the 4,873 Sonics built during that time, some 20 to 30 may be missing either an inner or outer front brake pad. The company says 4,296 of the potentially shoe-less Sonics were sent to the U.S., while 577 migrated north to Canadian customers.
A car minus just one inner or outer brake pad doesn't lose its ability to stop, but its braking performance will suffer and there is the possibility that other elements of the braking system, like the caliper or rotor, could be damaged as a result of their omission.
GM vows to notify all potentially affected Sonic owners and install any missing pads and, if necessary, replace any calipers or rotors free of charge.[/release]
Wow, it takes skill to forget to install brakes on cars for 6 months...

Brakes =/= Brake pads.
gotta go fast
Title should be more sensationalist. Recalls happen all too often to be any news worthy, but something like "GM forgets brakes on Chevy Sonic" sounds better and would probably attract more attention.
Derp. Come on GM, that's a pretty important part, shouldn't be forgetting to install them.
There isn't anything entirely dangerous with it other than the rotor/caliper performance being affected; it is good to see that they'll fix the issue and repair any damage to the caliper/rotor. It's not a hard fix anyways, if you have any moderate car maintenance knowledge and have ever changed your brake pads it's easy to tell if the rotor needs replaced or of the caliper isn't functioning properly. The biggest indicator being that braking is significantly less responsive than it should be, or your car pulls to the affected side when braking.
Somebody is gonna get fired. At least they are fixing the problem for free.
I don't get how that could happen it is not like a brake pad is a very small part, you would think somebody along the line would have said "Hey, something is missing here."
They recalled the Corsa in the UK because the ABS didn't work, and the handbrakes are known to fail too
At least it was only 20 or 30 cars affected by the actual issue, and replacing the brake pads will be a relatively easy fix.
Most likely it was a simple mistake, It's not a major issue because you can still break the main thing is that yeah your rotors or calipers will take damage. Even then you should know right away from grinding or a loud squeel when you brake. That lets you know time to change or get pads
Always add means to stop before adding means of... go
