• Santorum to sick kid: Don’t complain about $1 million drug costs
Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told the mother of a child with a rare genetic disorder on Tuesday that she shouldn’t have a problem paying $1 million a year for drugs because Apple’s iPad can cost around $900. Speaking to more than 400 people at Woodland Park, Colorado, the former Pennsylvania senator said that demand should set prices for drugs. “People have no problem paying $900 for an iPad,” the candidate explained. “But paying $900 for a drug they have a problem with — it keeps you alive. Why? Because you’ve been conditioned to think health care is something you can get without having to pay for it.” The mother replied that she could not afford her son’s medication, Abilify, which can cost as much as $1 million a year without health insurance. “Look, I want your son and everybody to have the opportunity to stay alive on much-needed drugs,” Santorum insisted. “But the bottom line is, we have to give companies the incentive to make those drugs. And if they don’t have the incentive to make those drugs, your son won’t be alive and lots of other people in this country won’t be alive.” “He’s alive today because drug companies provide care,” the candidate continued. “And if they didn’t think they could make money providing that drug, that drug wouldn’t be here. I sympathize with these compassionate cases. … I want your son to stay alive on much-needed drugs. Fact is, we need companies to have incentives to make drugs. If they don’t have incentives, they won’t make those drugs. We either believe in markets or we don’t.”
Video in source http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/02/02/santorum-to-sick-kid-dont-complain-about-1-million-drug-costs/
Rick, please never come back to Colorado.
Once again sticking to his nickname.
What an asshole.
Only someone who has (a lot) money would say that.
People have no problem paying $900 for an iPad,” the candidate explained. “But paying $900 for a drug they have a problem with — it keeps you alive. Why? Because you’ve been conditioned to think health care is something you can get without having to pay for it.” what about every nation that has free health care on the planet lol and what about those incentives for healthcare companies santorum oh yeah, whoops. forgot that your beloved country is charged double than most (one clusterfuck of an incentive)
He's right if the world would be about money, but it shouldn't be, and just because they can't afford the drugs it is not a reason to alienate them. And comparing an IPad to drugs is just uncalled for.
I know I am going to get rated dumb for saying this but he does have a point, although he dosen't have to be so blunt about it and there are possible changes for it. Yes he is an asshole, but in our economy you should have to pay for things, drugs can be expensive to create, I personally think the government should pay for them to be made then give low drug costs to the users, but thats not gonna happen.
What doesn't get good jokes or free healthcare? [sp]Americans oh ho ho I am a funny man[/sp]
The only semblance of a point that I can see is that pharma companies need to make money, which is true to support themselves, but considering they charge mark-ups often over 1000% of what it actually costs to make each pill, he has no point.
I like the fact that, where I live, I can get fataly ill, receive free treatment and cheap meds. Why? I would say "compassion-from-our-government" but they're capitalist dictators as much as the US. Certain things are simply "human rights", including healthcare. Why? Would you want to live in a world where you have to pay for everything? Even the things that should be given to you, as a human. Oh wait, we already are.

It will never work! Wait....
What a dick.
Jesus christ, these candidates are so goddamned stupid.
Why? Because you’ve been conditioned to think health care is something you can get without having to pay for it.
Dogwhistle: if you're poor and sick it's your own damn fault, vote for ME republicans!
“But the bottom line is, we have to give companies the incentive to make those drugs. And if they don’t have the incentive to make those drugs, your son won’t be alive and lots of other people in this country won’t be alive.”
Yes cause money is worth so much more than someone's life.
I don't understand how anyone can like or vote for Santorum. He doesn't even try to put on a facade.
I wish death upon this man.
Yes cause money is worth so much more than someone's life.
Supply-side economics at its finest
I like the fact that, where I live, I can get fataly ill, receive free treatment and cheap meds.
if you were fatally ill you'd be dead
because paying $900 once = $1 million each year?
I wish death upon this man.
Something involving jellyfish.
Yet prisoners get their expensive treatment for free :downs:
Yet prisoners get their expensive treatment for free :downs:
It all makes sense now! All of the recent bills and laws that would allow the arrest of countless normal citizens are actually a secret plan by Obama to bring free healthcare to the nation!
Does he realise that people dont have to pay for a new ipad every fucking day? Oh wait this is the same guy who compared the war in Iraq to fucking lord of the rings.
Funny since my current homework assignment is to read this essay by Santorum. We have to then write an essay response if we agree with him or not. This is going to be fun. Here I am at school now: [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/AEKzP.jpg[/thumb]
I wish death upon this man.
No, he's just ill informed. and to be honest, i agree with what he said, but he's wrong when he says people think healthcare should be free. Noone believes that. Healthcare becomes affordable when people start paying for others, and others pay for you.
Does he realise that people dont have to pay a new ipad every fucking day?
no since hes a rich, greedy ass, generic politician
Does he realise that people dont have to pay a new ipad every fucking day? Oh wait this is the same guy who compared the war in Iraq to fucking lord of the rings.
Yes, he does. No, he doesn't care. Wait, when the fuck did he do that
