Boring parts of every game are boring, in this case mining/missions.
It's kinda equivalent to playing Vault 101 and calling Fallout 3 boring.

They are if you want them to be. Eve is more about the player driven faction wars.

They are as big of a part as you want them to be. I haven't ran missions or mined in years.

I haven't mined or missioned for about a year now, so make of that what you will.

They're as big or as little of a part as you make them. EVE is a sandbox game, and those are two of the things you can do. They're the most obvious things to do for new players, because they're most like what you'd expect to do in an "on rails" MMO, but they're hardly the most fun, not nearly the most profitable, and entirely optional. Some people like them, one of my good friends has been mining in a wormhole for the past year, and he really seems to be enjoying himself, but most folk find that stuff quite dull. I have never mined, and I make more money running a fifteen minute salvage site in nullsec than I do in an hour-and-a-half grind in a mission in high sec, so I can easily fund my PVP escapades, and haven't run a mission in ages.
