I searched the forums, saw a bunch of random threads, none of them really helping to solve my problem.
I have a newer Dell XPS Laptop (good hardware) win7 x64 - this is one of the laptops with dual graphics (both the HD4000 and a 600m gtx)
I have updated drivers, downloaded C++, java, etc - nothing helps.
The game installs ok, and I can play other games fine - Rust when I click play on steam or where ever - doesn't do anything, the box never pops up when you normally launch the game.
Any help would be great - it's a bummer to not have my good laptop play Rust when I'm on the road.
I assume you're using the 600m gtx, the HD 4000 may have problems. Have you tried verifying the game cache? Also try testing another game that uses Unity to see if it's an issue with Unity

yes @ the cache.
I do not play any other 'unity' games to test - but other games work fine.
If you have dual graphics, you MUST use the drivers provided by Dell. If you went to the Nvidia website and downloaded their drivers, that's probably the reason you're having trouble.
The GPU switcharoo logic that switches between the HD4000 and GTX 600M is proprietary Dell hardware and requires their drivers in order to work properly.

Wait, that's actually a thing?
There have been laptops with dual GPUs in that configuration for years. The idea behind it is that the weaker and less power hungry GPU is used most of the time to conserve battery life, while the more powerful GPU is only switched in when performance is required (ie. games).
The problem with it is that it was the brainchild of laptop OEMs and not the major GPU manufacturers. So you're entirely reliant on proprietary drivers from the laptop OEM for the fantastically complicated logic required for it to work.
Like with all weird proprietary setups like this, the people that buy these laptops are invariably screwed. laptop OEMs care more about the idea behind it and less about supporting it. You aren't going to get anywhere near the same level of driver support as you would if you were using either GPU alone, plus laptop OEMs have a habit of dropping all support for the driver within just a few years making your laptop useless if any major issues crop up.
Such absurd configurations with modern GPUs are completely unnecessary, at least with AMD parts. From the HD5xxx series onwards, the GPU can be made to consume the same or less power than an Intel IGP and still have far more functionality.

I uninstalled both devices and drivers, reinstalled from dell - still no launch.
I click play and nothing happens. :(
Anyone have other ideas?
I'd really like to be able to play rust on my latpop.

Oh. I was thinking of it being used in some god awful pseudo sli. My old Toshiba did that just fine with only nvidia drivers though

I think this is as close to reality as you'll get with something crazy like that:
