A Malaysian man charged with raping a 14-year-old girl has avoided prison after marrying his victim, sparking anger from rights groups and calls for bans on child marriage. Ahmad Syukri Yusuf, 22, faced 30 years in prison and being whipped after he was charged with statutory rape of the girl. But he has avoided the sentence after marrying the teenager under Islamic law. Prosecutor Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid said a court in Kuching, in Malaysia’s eastern state of Sarawak, ruled the case need no longer continue after a marriage certificate was produced and the girl withdrew the complaint, Reuters reports. Under Malaysia’s civil laws, the minimum age for marriage is 18, but under Sharia law, Islamic courts can grant permission to Muslims under 16, allowing them to marry as children. The ruling has prompted outrage from women’s rights groups. Speaking to Reuters, Kuala Lumpur-based Women's Aid Organization spokeswoman Tan Heang Lee said: “It is very common for rapists to marry their survivors, especially when they are underage, to cover up their crime,“ “There is usually a high risk in this kind of cases that these girls will be subject to a lifetime of sexual abuse. Her marriage is basically an extension to rape,” she added.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/malaysian-man-ahmad-syukri-yusuf-rape-charge-escapes-jail-marrying-14-year-old-victim-a7171276.html http://time.com/4438342/malaysia-rape-marry-victim/
Why is Sharia law even allowed to be used again? It clashes with and destroys tons of moral concepts the civilized world uses.
Gotta love Islamic law.
Why is Sharia law even allowed to be used again? It clashes with and destroys tons of moral concepts the civilized world uses.
Malaysia isn't part of the civilized world, clearly.

Being civilized doesn't necessarily mean having a secular, individualist society. They are not backwards or forward in time, they just are.
They're just stuck with a mentality that allows rapists to escape jail by marrying the victims And rape victims being stoned for seducing men into raping
It's a shitty mentality but what do you expect from an islander nation with poor rule of law and limited exposure to 'western' values. It's like Brunei lite.
I dont think this shit would ever pass if it happened in our more developed states like Kuala Lumpur.
It's a shitty mentality but what do you expect from an islander nation with poor rule of law and limited exposure to 'western' values. It's like Brunei lite.
Actually, Saudi Arabia's an insanely rich country at the heart of the Middle East with basically no rule of law and plenty of exposure to "Western" values. It's shitty because it's dominated by a theocracy, and no matter what religion takes the stage, that's exactly how it's going to be.

This is despicable. What kind of justice is this? But yeah but we are the ones with rape culture...

Islamic Law is a bunch of bullshit.
i love everything about this great country and our culture [editline]5th August 2016[/editline] almost as much as i love watching 5 million local television cookie cutter dramas, most of which just so happens to be centering on abusive/actual rape scenarios between a man and a woman whereby the woman eventually succumbs to the charming quirks of her captor/abuser and marrying him and the series gets its happy ending
That's fucking crazy. Are any of them on youtube or is there anyway to see this? (with translation preferably)

When I say "countries like the u.S./Canada/Europe", I mean those countries and other places like them, Brazil, Africa, and Asia.
That's just feral.
A lifetime of sexual abuse after being raped, how fucking deplorable

Since she is a minor, he was charged with statutory rape. Perhaps the title should be changed to "charged with statutory rape" to better reflect this. [editline]5th August 2016[/editline]
And rape victims being stoned for seducing men into raping
I admit I don't actually know much about the rural areas of Msia but I doubt this is a thing over there. Or is it?
I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt, but the fact that this guy is willing to force a child into marriage in order to escape rape charges tells me that he's the special kind of shitlord that wouldn't wait for consent
Take a look at a world map real quick
Dude, I lived there. Did I just use the wrong term or something? It's part of the Arabian peninsula which is connected to the mainland, so I thought that qualified it. [editline]abc[/editline] Guess I did. Let me change that.

Is rape just a normal way of life over there?
Why is Sharia law even allowed to be used again? It clashes with and destroys tons of moral concepts the civilized world uses.
I'd be 100% fine with the harshest interpretation of Sharia if two, impossible conditions are met: 1) As long as anyone can freely move in and out of any country that they like, or don't like anymore. (Assuming you are not a felon or something, serving a sentence in that particular country.) and 2) As long as nobody felt the need to physically assault others for leading vastly different lifestyles.
stop, you really have no idea what youre talking about
Not to mention under the harshest interpretation of Sharia law, half of the population would have no right to move freely without consent.
