Fish can remember things for months, according to researchers who have dismissed the myth that the animals have a three-second memory.
The traditional view that fish lack the brain power to retain memories is "absolute rubbish" said Dr Kevin Warburton, an adjunct researcher with Charles Sturt University's Institute for Land, Water and Society in Australia.
He made his conclusions after studying the behaviour of Australian freshwater fish such as the silver perch, which can remember a predator for several months after only one encounter.

Remember to refrain from tapping on the goldfish bowl
Old news mate.
Mythbusters.
I remember when the Mythbusters did this myth like 2 years ago.
Apparently fish where one of the first(Or the very first) to have migration patterns and memory.
Say, why aren't you supposed to tap on the tank anyway?

i knew this years ago
I thought the myth was only about goldfish???
This was tested in like the first season of Mythbusters.
Anyone who thought about it logically would have already realised this.
I knew it.

Fish have sensitive hearing. A direct tap on the glass can be very stressful.
QI picked up on this ages ago also.
If memory cells where used at that rate in animals, then our memory would only last a day.
I always thought that the three second rule was an excuse to put your fish in an incredibly tiny tank and not feel mean about it.
Luckily the tank my fish had was massive for them :350:

I don't remember Fry's explanation, but I remember Davies mentioned "asking the fish about last night's Eastenders and it it would tell you."
