• Linux Optimization

I recently bought Rust but I'm having some problems. The main one that I'm facing is the horrible lag, I've fiddled around in the console and I've switched off a lot of stuff, such as AA, sun rays, clouds, grass (but not the grass sprites), grass shadows and a lot more. It's still really laggy, even when I run it in a very low res. I'm running Arch 64 bit if that helps. Does anyone have any possible fixes to eliminate, even if it's just a little bit of the lag?
What are the specs of your computer? And are you using the proprietary display driver for your video card? while the FOSS drivers that come with Linux usually have 3D support, it's lackluster and you only get a fraction of the performance you would get otherwise with the proprietary driver.
I'm using the nvidia binary drivers. It's a laptop, but it has a discrete GeForce G210M. 4 GB of RAM. Core 2 Duo @ 2.20GHz. x64 linux 3.12.9-2.
The G210M is an entry level GPU, its not designed to do any sort of gaming and isn't going to do any sort of gaming. The only thing it's going to do is basic video output and maybe anemically do video acceleration. To put it in perspective, it only has 16 SPUs (shader processor units) when most Nvidia cards that you can actually play games on have between 128-256 SPUs.
I was able to play Crysis with moderately good graphics and I can usually bring settings down on a game where it doesn't look extremely bad and is playable. I've turned off a lot of things in Rust as I mentioned before. I've played many games that tax my computer but Rust seems to do it even more than those, even if I manage to make everything incredibly ugly.
I wouldn't exactly consider Rust nearly as optimized as a AAA game that's had it's time to work out all the kinks.
I agree. I hope in the future they'll be able to optimize it more.
I'm sure they will. Haven't played it, but it's still pretty early on, isn't it?
