Hi guiz! It's been suggested by some that we hold a competition for 3d modeling so it's about nigh time someone sat down to set it up. This isn't for prizes, but for bragging rights and fun. I like organized lists so here we go!
If you think I'm being strict then go here to see why I'm not. We should do a super lowpoly competition in the future :buddy:
Rules

One entry per person, don't use alts to post more content. That would be stupid.

No 2 second shit, take this seriously or it will never take off.

Must be your own work

Must be submitted by July the 22. 2 weeks should be plenty of time.
How you should post
1 or more normal renders of said model showing off all aspects of it.
Poly count (preferably a viewport screencap with statistics enabled).
Type of airplane you modeled and a link to an image of it or a wiki-page (If real).
(OPTIONAL)
Link to textures used.
1 or more wireframe.
(These do not have to be in this exact order, but don't have a cluttered post)
How voting will work
Hopefully if all goes well a poll can be set up for the voting. Voting should not be based on the render itself but the plane model only. See Rendering for more details. Please don't use alts to vote and vote honestly.
Rendering your final, beautiful creation
Don't have a huge ass render. If you do, scale it down yourself so it can fit on at least a 1280x1024 monitor.
Posting your lovely progress
Only post progress in the form of renders of the model. These renders should be as small as possible and follow all rules under Rendering. Be smart with posting progress. I don't really want to see you posting ever single vertex you move This is completely optional.
July 22 for those of you that skimmed and missed the deadline.
Suggestions and url spot:

(Any other urls would be great.)
I'm doing an Antonov An-124
Final notes:
I recommend not procrastinating. Have fun. Be creative. Post all content inside this topic. If you see any errors I made with this post please correct me and I'll update ASAP.
GOGOGO.
No more than 1k polies? Say, are you a 3d modeller, do you know that making a good looking plane with only 1k polies is quite hard.
Overall rules are too strict. Also 512x512? lol
I might make an attempt.

The point of this is low poly. I posted a link just for people who think this is strict.
My Antonov is < 500 so far. It's not hard at all.
I'm trying to get people to rely on textures more than their SUPER HIGH POLY MODELS. Low poly modeling is so much more challenging and fun IMO. Plus when you pull of a badass low poly model you feel :smug:
But if textures must be self made, then why do we need to post link to textures? Last question and then I quit shitting your thread.

Because I want to see all of your lovely textures. Same with the wireframe. I'd love to see people's lowpoly modeling techniques and how they did what they did. And plus it's a good way to verify it's 512x512-ness.
Cool, maybe I'll make something if I have time.
If anyone thinks the timeframe is too short i can lengthen it.

polies ~20
I meant this to be a serious competition.

12 polies
[editline]03:32PM[/editline]
its a real fuckin big paper airplane to fit your RIGID guidelines
I'd rate you winner if I could.
Anyways, people suggested a challenge. Anyone want to commit?
This is not a challenge imo... Why 512x512 textures? Wouldn't low polys benefit from a higher resolution texture? This "challenge" is a bit too strict for a "fun" competition.

I'll remove some restrictions.
Might do something, but I'll probably ignore (most of) the rules.

Which ones?
Also if you think I'm strict: http://boards.polycount.net/forumdisplay.php?f=58
Yea, I would do it if it was not low poly. I don't like using low poly unless there is a point, like I am importing into a game. I may make an airplane, but I'm ignoring the poly limit, and the map size. Actually, if I make anything, it will be a goddamn capital ship, like from EVE.
Increased poly count by an assload and removed texture size limits. FP really sucks at competitions.

We don't suck, we just don't like stupid limits. 500 tris? These robot models look fucking ugly, I don't see a reason to compete with such ugly models. IMO it should be like 10k for game or something, not fucking 500, this is 2009 now.

I think most of the models look great. They're squeezing every bit of creative detail out of so little and I love that. I really think that practicing making models like that can make you a lot better modeler. I know what todays graphical capabilities are. I'm a researcher. I do lowpoly for fun.

Well, low poly isn't bad, but damn, using 512x512 or even 256x256 is kinda meh. I agree, effort is great, but result isn't eye pleasing.

It is if you do it right. If you're making a game for a platform like the NDS or PSP low poly skills are good to have.
If I don't have to work too much this week and next, I'll make:

EDIT: Your rules are very...what's the word...odd I guess.
I don't see why. Especially not that I've changed them they should be EXTREMELY simple. You probably won't even try to abide by them, but still wouldnt' break. Treat them as guidelines if you wish. Since this is the first contest in a long time and nobody seems willing to go for my lowpoly shit.
It's just hard to get people to compete. I had a car competition that had almost no guidelines, and even then I only got 3 people, including myself.
That's why I asked Pling to make a subforum or a thread. Because if you don't have a green/gold/purple name people won't do shit.

Almost true. But purple and gold doesn't mean shit.
Almost true. But purple and gold doesn't mean shit.
Yeah but people still act differently.
Yeah but people still act differently.
No, Mods are douchbags just like normal people.
EDIT: Not all mods, mind you.
If anyone is up for a big challenge, how about the prototype Horten Ho 229?

(yes, it is a real plane)
