• Huge problem caused by ATI Overdrive. No where else to turn

Heya gang. I'm really in a huge pickle right now, and I need help bad. Okay, it all started in the Catalyst Control Centre. I wanted to boost my virtual memory because I was having trouble running a stalker mod. I raised the slider almost all the way, then clicked apply, but then the entire screen just went red. I couldn't do anything to get out of it, except restart the computer. I then realized the same thing kept happening when I fullscreened something, like a game or a video. I thought this was unacceptable, so I went back into the CCC to reset the VRAM slider, but as soon as the window for the CCC opened, the same fuckin' thing happened AGAIN! I realized I was in deep shit, because the CCC is the only place I can reset the ATI Overdrive, and so far I've tried everything to fix this. I can't do anything in Safe Mode because CCC isn't allowed to open in Safe Mode, I did a complete reinstall of everything ATI on my computer, I did a System Restore, but no dice. The only way for me to change it back to normal is to do it in the CCC, but my computer crashes when I open it, and crashes whenever I do anything that alters video, like changing the resolution. I s'pect the only way this can be fixed is to change some kind of registry or something, I don't know. I'm not all that good with computers. I know how to copy and paste and install stuff, but the advaced stuff like messing with the system32 or changing hardcoded entries is way out of my league. I can probably do it if someone did a really easy to follow guide, that someone as simple as me can understand. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And if we can fix this, I'm changing from ATI, because enough is enough.
Have you tried restoring your computer from a date before you done this?
Moral of the story, do not mess with stuff you dont know how to mess with, ever. As for a solution to your problem, I am pretty sure ATI Overdrive will overclock your graphics card for you, deciding what speed it can get it up to without damaging it, although I would be fairly skeptical of this being useful, if you are going to overclock it do it the proper way, not using some marketing gimmick tool. To reset the card to factory settings, you should just have to reinstall the device drivers. If your card is dyiny every time it is being used for graphically intense work, ATI Overdrive might have overcooked your card a bit. As for checking if it really is, I am unsure, have never had to test if a card is working or not, will google around a bit.
Try the new CCC You should be able to download the latest version of the Catalyst Control Center/drivers for your video card from here: http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx Hope this helps!
Have you tried restoring your computer from a date before you done this?
Yeah, I restored it to a point just before I messed everything up, which supports Spaceman's theory that I might have damaged my card. I was an idiot for even touching it, but can I really be blamed? I mean, ATI just gives you a simple overclocking interface that, for people like me, "looks all shiny and cool". I would have thought that if you meddled with Overdrive, no harm would come to your computer, otherwise ATI wouldn't have put it there in the first place, because for people like me, they see it's a simple interface with limits on the sliders, so what harm could it do, you know? And even then, I don't think Overdrive even does it's job correctly. Now and again I used to increase the sliders a little bit at a time and I didn't notice a difference in fps in any game. The only difference I saw is that when I played any game, there was a ton of graphical artifacts, that disappeared when I put the sliders back to their defaults. So all in all, I blame both myself and ATI. Me, for meddling with Overdrive in the first place, and ATI for including Overdrive! Ah well, I was going to get a new GPU anyway. I got sick of ATI's bullshit drivers. I swear to God, everytime I installed the newest one, there was a new problem, like some games crashing on startup, or lag, and other nasty stuff like that. I'm switching back to NVIDIA after all this is sorted. If worst comes to worst and my card IS damaged, could you guys recommend me a good NVIDIA GPU? I have a big budget, but nothing over £800 (if there are cards out there that are more than that). I don't stay on top of the new and current GPU's, so I don't know what's out there. EDIT: Noticed a new thing too, when it crashes. If theres sounds playing when it crashes, the sound freezes and turns into that "RRRRRRRRRRRRRR" sound you get when you BSoD. The theory that the card might be damaged is becoming more and more plausible. Thank god it's still under warranty.
Hope you get it fixed Good luck

I once killed a £120 motherboard by trying to flash the BIOS with a flash utility that runs through the operating system, bad move as flashing a BIOS is sort of dodgy as minor power fluctuations can brick the BIOS, which by using the flash utility, bundled with my motherboard, ended up bricking it. Lesson well learnt! If your going to try and RMA it, I think your best bet is to just bullshit your way through the process, where did you buy it from?
A website called Cube 24/7. Shitty company but I've bought 2 computers from them so far. So far, I've always had problems with this GPU, so maybe the card was faulty anyway. In which case, I can claim the warranty.
Before you do that, download DriverSweeper, go into safe mode (by spamming F8 while the PC boots up) and do a full ATi cleanout. After that, reboot the PC and download & install the latest drivers from AMD's website. I find it quite hard to believe that AMD overdrive would destroy a card, seeing as it's designed to be an actual safe way of doing minor overclocking. I'd guess it fucked up the driver, and now you haven't removed them properly before installing the new ones. Also, boosting your virtual memory? I presume you mean changing the clock of your Video RAM? Driver Sweeper download: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
Any help would be greatly appreciated. And if we can fix this, I'm changing from ATI, because enough is enough.
I'm sorry, but you are stupid. Overclocking your graphics card is always a dangerous move. You can fuck up nVidia cards in the exact same way, being an idiot is not a good reason to not buy ATI.
ATi are shit, gave me massive buyers remorse cus of their shitty drivers. I am gonna buy a gtx 560 ti soon

I noticed that I was starting to crash less and less, to the point I could play games n stuff again. I finally manned up and I tried to open CCC, and it worked. Set the sliders back to their defaults and now everythings back to normal. Thank you so much to everyone who tried to help, except Darkebrz, who's an asshole.

I have a nVidia card. It would take me about 10 seconds to do exactly what you did, and the exact same thing would happen.
I can support Darkebrz, i couldn't tell if my video card clocks were actually setting; so as a test i set everything to max. Immediately after i pressed apply the screen turned a solid brown. Unlike critein_protein though, the clocks didn't save through the crash.
