• Question about a laptop for University.

G'day folks! As I'm heading to university in the fall to study Engineering, I've decided (along with my parents, as this is going to be a high school graduation gift) to grab myself a laptop. I'm stuck between these 6. I've broadened my brand preferences from just ASUS to Samsung as well, apparently they make good laptops as well. I'd like this to be able to study/take notes on, as well as the occasional game (Minecraft, maybe source games on lower settings). http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX35914 I really don't like the silver on black design, it brings me back to early 2000's computers Also, it's an i7. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39922 Not that I hate macs or anything, but it just reminds me of a macbook and I really dislike the colors involved. i7. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX37683 Not bad, I'm just wondering what the battery life on this is, considering that I'll probably be out and about for 12 hours a day for the next 4-5 years. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39831 most interesting to me, to be honest, it looks like it has nice specs, looks nice, has an amazing battery life as far as multiple videos go, and the only one in the list that is an i5, surprisingly. Higher price though. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39464 http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX37261 Nothing to say, I like the color, but it's an i7. Keep in mind I'd much rather have an i5, considering from what I've read, i7's in laptops are battery slaughtering bastards. Also, does looks really matter for a laptop? I mean, I sort of dislike the look of a couple of them, and I'd rather not have them because of their looks (along with maybe they have an i7. the website I'm using doesn't really have many laptops with the specs I'm looking for) I dunno, it seems like I wouldn't put up with the laptop because it looks weird (that could just be me being extremely picky, but hey, if I'm going to have this for quite a long time, I'd at least want something that looks good in my eyes) If you're going to link other laptops, I'd appreciate if you'd use the website I've been using, and if you can't recommend anything else, maybe use www.newegg.ca for it. I'd appreciate the following specs. -i5 (i7 MAYBE if the battery life is good enough) -8GB of ram (I'd rather have this than 4GB, unless you can convince me, and I'm not easily convinced. I'd like this to be as "future-proofed" as a laptop can be) -SSD(?) I'm not sure about this one. How long would an SSD last before crapping out? I've never had one before, so I have no idea about them other than they're screaming fast. The size doesn't necessarily matter, due to the fact that I have external drives I can use, along with my desktop. -Battery life. This is a BIG one. I mean life as in "would it last me for a day" and "would it last over the years". -Weight. I'm not too too concerned with this, as it's going to be in a backpack/messenger bag. I'd still like it to be fairly light. Considering if I look at a so-called "Ultra-book", I have to be concerned about the whole unit. If ONE thing goes on it, it's completely trash. If something like the battery or ram chip or HDD goes, I could probably replace it (if it was out of the warranty period, of course). I dunno, It's still really up in the air, and I'm overwhelmed by all the possibilities that are offered. I whittled myself down from ASUS's G line (jesus christ they look like "TOTLLY GAMR DAWG") because of the shitty battery life. I had convinced myself that I'd sell my desktop and use the money towards one of them (used parts? not going to happen) Anyways, sorry if this post is a mess, and I'm rambling. But I just need some help. I'll probably be posting this on several different forums, so I can get shitloads of answers :P. Thank you for reading through my mess of an OP! :)
You'll also want to provide the applications that are required to be in the course as well so we can see what their demands/requirements are.
This is the laptop I decided on for college with some convincing from fellow FPers http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839473-REG/ASUS_U36SG_DS51_U36SG_DS51_13_3_Notebook_Computer.html I think they ship to Canada, not sure about the costs Specs: Ram - 4 GB - You could upgrade this easily HDD - 750 GB 5400 RPM - Again easily upgradable, I'll probably upgrade mine to an SSD as well after I get it Processor - Intel i5 2450m Size - 13.3" - Not sure what you're needs are. Weight - 3.66 pounds Graphics - Intel 3000 Graphics/Nvidia GT 520m card - Switches for Battery Saving Battery - "Up to 10 Hours" - While I don't trust 10 Hours I've heard it's fairly good It's not an amazing unit but I thought it'd be a good money saving and easy to carry solution.

Only problem is I'd rather have a 15" laptop. (Actually I'd rather have something bigger, but then it gets a bit redonkulous) Reason is, I have really big hands, and from what I've seen from pictures and videos of various 13.3 inch laptops, it looks like I'd really have trouble typing on them. Granted, this is a lot smaller (10 inches) my ASUS Transformer pad/keyboard is just a clusterspam of my fingers trying to hit the right keys, so much in fact, I have to curl my thumbs under the keyboard and clawtype on the keyboard... :\
Yeah, my hands are pretty small even though I'm an average/large person. Personally if I was you I'd go for this http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX34508 Just throw in 8GB of Ram and an SSD? [editline]14th July 2012[/editline] Although if 14" is okay I'd go for this http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39226 Slightly more but you get more ports, better processor or this which is still 15.6" http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX38726
