Disney to ban smoking from their films PG-13 & under

CEO Bob Iger announced his new policy at Disney’s annual shareholder meeting in response to an investor question. He said that he will “absolutely prohibit” depiction of smoking in Disney films with a PG-13 rating or below, unless they involve an historical figure who smoked.
“I thought it was the right thing for us to do,” he said about the decision — which he says he made over the last 48 hours.
But he stopped short of promising to lobby the MPAA to do the same for R-rated films. “We don’t get involved in how MPAA applies ratings to films….nor do we try to influence the policies of the other studios we compete with,” he said.

Honestly do not see any issue with this whatsoever unless it's retroactive
It's a nice gesture, but i don't see the big deal about it. In our day and age most people know that smoking is bad for you.
Some characters just fit the whole sigar in their mouth design.
Honestly do not see any issue with this whatsoever unless it's retroactive
Man, if this winds up being retroactive then Who Framed Roger Rabbit is fucked
So no more Tony Stark smoking cigars? What the hell.
But how will they convey cool and edgy characters now?
J Jameson won't be smoking cigars in Spider-Man then.

Are they going to start replacing the smoking with lolipops then?
If I ever start thinking 'wow that person looks cool smoking', I'm instantly reminded by how they actually smell in real life and grimace a little

I don't smoke and only ever smoked 1 cig in my life but for some reason I really like the smell of cigarette smoke. Like when it's coming straight from the cig. The aftersmell in clothes/mouth/etc on the other hand makes me sick.
I feel like the removal of smoking could go against certain artistic character and stylistic choices, but I guess it's only PG and G Disney films...
And if they are worried about what kids identify with, it's a slippery slope. Remove all violence and villainy?

also didn't they smoke some gnarly shit in Peter Pan with the indian bros?
This should really only be for G and PG films. I think 13 year old kids can handle seeing an adult smoking. Hell, kids under 13 are probably going to be watching R-rated movies with smoking anyways, so this is kind of pointless.
A bit surprised they're applying this to PG-13.
Hell, kids under 13 are probably going to be watching R-rated movies with smoking anyways, so this is kind of pointless.
Just because they do it does not mean it's okay. R rated movies are not for kids under 13.
If you're worried about provoking smoking, context matters more then anything. And having a company policy along the lines of "No smoking in under PG-13 movies" seems stupid.
It's about kids doing as adults do, especially the ones they look up to. If they see a grown up they admire smoking, they might try it out because of that.

Petition to make Jameson a historical figure?
How am I supposed to know who the bad guy is?

Yeah this. If their parents didn't teach them that smoking is bad, the lack of smokes in a disney movie won't either.
I don't really see the sense of it, but I guess there's no harm done either.

Pipe smoking is superior in every way anyway.
Not surprising, since they refused to show Walt Disney smoking on screen during Saving Mr. Banks.
Are they going to "tastefully update" old Disney movies? :v:
I honestly can't remember the last time I saw anyone smoke in a Disney movie...

I'm sorry, is there actually an effort to remove smoking from R-rated films?
Those people need to fuck off so hard.
Thank god, every smoker who I know smokes because of the Disney cartoons they watched as children.... Wait... No.
Just because they do it does not mean it's okay. R rated movies are not for kids under 13.
Nah, it's fine. They're probably too busy playing 18+ games to look at the screen.
Let's face it, ratings really don't matter. I went to a theater and watched Tenacious D when I was [del]3[/del] 8 :v:

I grew up around smokers and I actually enjoy the odd sniff I get when I walk past somebody smoking.
I'd never take up smoking myself because I'm not a dingle, but something in that cloud of nostalgia really gets me
I thought this was already sort of a thing? Like they wouldn't portray smoking unless it was the villain (or maybe that was just TV shows)? Is this just an extension of that?
iirc; at the investors meeting they weren't trying to lobby for smoking to be banned in R Rated movies, rather to give any movie an instant R rating if the movie features smoking

Also I was going to say, how much smoking is there in disney's stuff anyway?
Lots, apparently.
