Can the original xbox steam AVIs and MP4s over LAN?

I know that it probably won't be able to deal with MP4s, but if were to plug it into a network with a LAN cable, could you use it as a jukebox/film player?
You could get a mod chip and install XBMC, It plays pretty much anything then.
I wasn't aware the original xbox had media player abilities from stock besides as a CD player that can rip to HDD? (I haven't used the stock dashboard in years though)
You DO mean the first xbox, right? :v:
Don't need a mod chip, you can softmod it.
What is this softmodding you speak of?
I'm terrible at this computer stuff, so laymans terms would be ideal.

There are few ways to softmod. One involves using an exploit in a game. I believe that is the simplest method, but you need to have certain stuff for it to work.
Another is a "riskier, but does work without having to buy anything" method. Its the one I personally chose. You take apart the Xbox, you boot it, but right before the splash screen ends, you pull out the IDE cable on the Xbox hard drive. Then you plug Xbox hard drive into a PC that you have running a boot disk that is used to softmod a Xbox. Then follow the instructions and let it do its work. Then you plug the Xbox hard drive back into the Xbox, then turn the Xbox off.
You need to let the Xbox start and turn off with the hard drive connected, because it locks and unlocks the hard drive everytime it turns on and off (I suppose to prevent tampering). Once your Xbox is softmodded though, you can pull the hard drive key off the Xbox so you can plug it straight into the PC.
If it can steam, then I wouldn't need to buy a rice cooker.

To make installing XBMC easier, use this: http://lifehacker.com/5298736/xbmc-installer-deluxe-makes-the-most-of-your-modded-xbox
If you want to save some money, you don't need the Action Replay kit, just the software: http://fury-tech.com/en/Guides/Xbox-Controller-Pc-Conversion-Mod/
With that you're able to use an Xbox controller with a PC, in addition to reading memory cards
Personally, I did the "Hotswap" method, which was a little time consuming, required me to open the Xbox and do some cable swapping that goes against everything I learned about computers... Though it worked great and I didn't need to buy the game.

If you DO want to use the Hotswap method of softmodding an Xbox, you go here: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263
Instead of the silly method to access xbins, download this program which will connect for you without having to install any programs: http://www.360mods.net/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=29
Softmodding isn't a good solution for a media center as you are only limited to the xbox's original hard drive. Which is either 8gb or 10gb, so it's best to hard mod for a media center as you can replace the hard drive.
Just use WMC and steam videos through it

I put a 40 GB in my softmodded Xbox.

My father got a 500Gb.

Well yeah I'm poor so I can't afford big hard drives.
Not like it really matters anyway. I just have XBMC connect to a network drive.

500GB HDDs are not even that expensive anymore. You can buy one for under $50 easily

You can replace it with certain hdds. I can't remember the name of program you need to use to clone and format the hard drive though. (configmagic maybe?)
You can also just have it stream from your network.
I remember renting games from Blockbuster taking them home, sticking them into my Xbox and clicking "Install to HDD". Those were the days.

500GB HDD was a necessity

I'm the "I need to find a job" poor. I'm so strapped for cash that even $10 is a small fortune.
