John Hunter wants to shoot stuff into space with a 3,600-foot gun. And he’s dead serious—he’s done the math. Making deliveries to an orbital outpost on a rocket costs $5,000 per pound, but using a space gun would cost just $250 per pound
Interesting. :iia:
Hell yeah this is awesome. But how practical is it?
Huge guns are always awesome.
Nice.
Sounds overpowered.
Well, he's gonna be rich.
Intergalactical mail!
By the sounds of things it would save them a lot of money over time and they can do more frequent deliveries.

A lot more practical than launching a fucking rocket into space every time you need to deliver something to a space station.
I have this gut feeling that somehow, it's gonna get turned into a weapon in some future war.
Wont be long until they stick people in capsules and shoot 'em.

After speeding down the 3,300-foot-long barrel, the projectile shoots out of the gun at 13,000 mph. An iris at the end of the gun closes, capturing the hydrogen gas to use again.
This is awesome.
How do you catch it in space?
They should build this even if they decide it won't work, I really wanna see this in action.
Holy shit badass.

Launch missles and other projectiles at 13,000 mph to get past defense systems?
With our box cannon, we can rate space dumb now :D
Eh, it's not really that simple. 5,000 Gs will prevent a lot of useful things from being launched, it would basically be limited to stuff like fuel and water that can't be damaged by pressure. Also, you have to build a carrier for the supplies that can survive the force of launch and still be able to maneuver on-orbit.

They should use this as a new death sentence
“A person shot out of it would probably get compressed to half their size,” Hunter says. “It’d be over real quick.”
Introducing the MW2 DLC, now with an even more overpowered secondary weapon than Model 1887.

But then rapists get to go into space and not me. Sure, they'll be dead but still - I wanna go to space!
talk about overkill, fucking awesome overkill.
talk about overkill, fucking awesome overkill.
how is it overkill
Gerald Bull did this same concept waaaay back in the 1960's with Project HARP. Too bad it got canceled due to the Vietnam War.

Iraq tried to do it with their Project Babylon superguns, but then Desert Storm came and the UN destroyed the program.
Sounds like this could lead to more awesome technologies.
I am space supplying guy, and this is my weapon.
how is it overkill
something coming out of a barrel going 13,000 mph? yeah i'd say that's overkill

Are you dumb?
It needs to go that fast to break earths gravitational pull and get into space.
That's not overkill at all.
Is it in the water or in a pipe? If it is, wouldn't it severely slow it down from having to fight against the water pressure? Wouldn't it be much more conventional to make this underground inside the country?
Just like in The Fist of God.
Seriously read that book.
Well I can see how practical this is.
"Hey guys, let's send up some food"
"Oops shit, SORRY VERIZON SATELLITE."
This is also a lot cheaper than a space elevator.
