Hey anyone that clicked on this thread because my title was soooo riveting, this is my first try at actually editing some video, i recorded with a d90 with myself and a tripod like 15 minutes before i had to go to class so its pretty short.
want to start making some movies soon and i just needed some footage to get use to the programs and stuff with editing and im looking for some crits, so just feel free to pick out every little thing that wrong with this video that you want and how i might fix it, THANKS!!! (in advance that is)

Your shots are a bit bright, especially the third one. Lower the exposure on your camera a bit and then adjust the lighting and color of the footage in After Effects so you can have complete control over what it'll look like.
Also, while it's common to see muzzle flashes that big in the majority of After Effects-aided gun fights, they aren't often found in real life. Here's a video of a few handguns shot in slow motion:

As you can see, it's pretty much a small, short lived puff of smoke that comes out of the barrel and an even smaller cloud that's emitted from the ejection port.
Finally, the blood effects you used were more jets of red smoke that trailed off out of view. Again, while common in After Effects, blood doesn't behave like that in real life - if someone gets shot they're going to have a hole in them and blood pouring out of it. At the initial impact I guess there could be blood jetting out, but I'd think it'd be more liquid in behavior and shorter lived. Skip to 2:13 on this to see what I'm talking about:

It's quicker and has more of an impact with its more realistic feel than the traditional After Effects cloud of blood. If you're standing in front of a tree when you get shot, maybe put some blood on the tree, or perhaps have a slowly growing puddle of it on the ground where you lie down afterwards.
Bear in mind, though, that while I use After Effects on occasion I'm not too familiar with the program and you've already outdone what I could do. I don't really see anything glaringly wrong with your footage, just these three minor details. If you continue doing stuff like this I'd like to see what you come up with in the future!
Acting is terrible. The way you fall feels so fake
If your going for realistic looking battle effects, take the time of day into consideration and show more smoke coming out of the gun then muzzle flash, also the flash wouldnt be that brightly highlighting his body. Yes the placement was good, but you have to mess with the effect colors and gamma rates to effectively make it one with the film. Keep practing but take the whole scene into consideration when adding these kinds of effects

thanks for the feedback its really helpful i tried a few things with blood like coming out and stuff and i couldnt couldnt get it to look right at all and the stock footage i had for it was just not workin with what i was trying to do, the second test i tried painting blood on the tree digitally and that just wasnt looking too good either, ill def have to keep trying tho

Thanks thats a really good point i wasnt even thinking about those things, i was just trying to get the effects in, ill have to be more careful with those things next time
The final shot did not make much sense to me.
It appeared that he was getting shot with a rifle from the same direction as the camera because of how the snow puffed, and then when he got shot the first time, it appeared to hit his neck. He would not be standing after that, and if he was, he'd be staggering at the very least.
Also, blood effects are off. Less of a spray and more of a constant pouring.

Other than that though, it was pretty good.
In the third shot, he's shot in the shoulder actually, then head..
The only thing I would complain about, was that the bullets that flies past you doesn't go in a straight line... which they kinda would...
The best part is watching an annoying emo get shot over and over.

ahh yea i wasnt being very careful with that last test i just kind of wanted to get it done haha but looking back on it i should have spent more time trying to get that stuff right, especially where the blood came out of him i should have lowered it and masked it behind me thanks for the advice

yea im not sure what happened there, it was hard to tell in after effects what was really going on until i actual rendered it and i didnt notice they wernt going straight

Hey you've made progress!
Why do people love to filter rape their videos so much? There is so much contrast and exposure. You need to be more subtle with the image adjustments mang.
