Sound drivers broken, fixing is proving difficult.

Right, my friend has an Advent Modena M100 Blue (the colour just affects the hard drive size) and recently, we've been trying to update his audio drivers to give him the option to use Stereo Mix on his laptop.
However, after attempting to install an updated audio driver (that failed), audio has stopped working entirely. As far as I can tell, the audio driver didn't contain a virus (it was from Cnet or Download.com, whatever you want to call it) and it didn't seem to install anything.
Restarting didn't help at all, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers didn't help at all. The driver is listed as being installed, it's just that it doesn't let you alter the sound.
Also - the driver manager says its failed to start the driver. (Code 10)
He has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and a 'High Definition Audio Chipset'. The brand of was IDT High Definition Audio.
He also says he cannot find the disc that contained the drivers that came with the laptop. Advent do not seem to have any drivers or support of any kind on their website.
What do?
Go to the audio manufacturer's website and look for drivers on there. If possible, rollback the drivers, and see if that will give him any audio at all. (No stereo mix is better than no audio)

We just had a look - Rollback drivers is totally grayed out. We can't click it.

There doesn't seem to be any drivers on there. Well the ones that are there are not compatible with the one he has.
Well there's a buttload of IDT related drivers at DriverGuide, don't know if any are good to you though.

There doesn't seem to be any for the particular laptop...

Particular laptop doesn't matter. What matters is the audio chipset built INTO the laptop. They can't afford to make a separate chipset for every different laptop, so they reuse them. Just look up the name of it that you see in the Device Manager.
