I've been considering upgrading to a quad-core processor for a while now (this namely) to run games like BF3 and GTA, however I don't know much more than 'that's good for running that'.
Where should I start with this? How do I find out if it's all compatible with my current motherboard?

AM2+ sockets can use an AM3 processor but not AM3+ with a simple bios update, So you can use any AM3 CPU but not am3+ Also I would suggest if you have the money get an asrock 1155 z68 and get an intel i5 2500k as that beats every AMD processor almost hands down, even their new bulldozer gets beat by the i5 2500k in almost every benchmark, and performance wise for the money it is worth it.
edit: Lol no point but this is kinda cool http://imgur.com/1PQPJ
You should specify how much you wish to spend, as zerokateo has a solid point, even the i3 2100 outpreforms a phenom 980.
If you still insist on only upgrading the cpu, then the 955 is basically the only choice you have, as the 960T is out of stock.
Well, does zerokateo mean I can use an i5 2500k with my current build?
No, you can not, you will have to buy yourself a new motherboard, but it will be well spent money, not only will you have a much bigger upgrade path, but you will also get a day and night performance difference.
Of course you will also get a big performance bump just by buying a phenom 955, if you're on a tight budget having only 100£$~ to spend, then its an obvious choice.
The 955 isn't a bad cpu, it just gets outperformed by a processor in the same price range and lies on a bad upgrade path as its basically the last step on the am3 socket as it is right now.
I've heard that the zosma is a tad better, but it doesn't seem to be available on scan and ebuyer.
You can try to find an AM2 socket quad and put it in there but I would suggest just getting the asrock 1155 as its only $125 and asrock asks you if you want to overclock the first time you start up the board along with an i5 2500k
I think I'll go for the 955.
