Supermarket Asda has said it has decided not to take part in Black Friday this year. It is not universally popular with retailers and experts are divided over whether others would follow Asda. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-34774289
the sainsburys i work at is just taking part in it to get rid of all of our cancelled lines and still make a profit, saves us warehouse room before christmas rush
What is black friday supposed to be about? Celebrating capitalism?
What is black friday supposed to be about? Celebrating capitalism?
Afaik it just became popular as a Christmas shopping day which then escalated into a holiday, but I might be wrong. Regardless, I fully understand why someone would not want to participate. People are fucking nuts when it comes to cheap and limited things.
People go absolutely mental over black Friday, like holy shit calm down.
All it seems to do is reel in suckers and bring out the worst in people.
Pepper;49092479']People go absolutely mental over black Friday, like holy shit calm down.
Hey man, I'd go crazy for an xbox one with 2 free games for $300 and the X1 doesn't even have any games I want to play
What is black friday supposed to be about? Celebrating capitalism?
It's kind of like the purge.
Sam's Club (Also owned by Walmart) isn't taking part in Black Friday either.
Good, they shove black friday up their arse
THANK YOU. Black friday has NEVER been a british thing and it's an infruiatingly blatant americanism that does not belong here. Fuelling consumerism and violence between people over products? No thanks.
Thank fuck. I'm surprised it's Asda that's not doing it of all stores, actually, given they're just an extension of Walmart.
Thank fuck. Dude, we made a fucking killing on Black Friday last year, I distinctly remember it because it was my induction day. My manager came in and told us exactly that. There was no violence and no need for any of the riot control that was posted, but everything sold. On the other hand, there were viral levels of violence in the Tesco stores in my city... so perhaps this is wise. I don't work fridays, so zero fucks given.
i fucking hope tesco don't because i'm the cunt who does final reductions and if i do that on black friday i'm fucked
Good, they shove black friday up their arse
They need to keep this shit back in America.
I think I'm scheduled to do a fire inspection at a Walmart on Black Friday. Because the store won't be chaotic enough without fire alarms going off.
I like to carry a bucket of popcorn and a plastic chair and sit in the back of my dad's pickup in the front of my hometown's Walmart parking lot when Black Friday rolls around. I'm not a big fan of football, but god damn are those people fun to watch.
What is black friday supposed to be about? Celebrating capitalism?
essentially. In the US we take the thursday of thanksgiving to celebrate what we are most thankful for and everything we've been given in life. The very next day we celebrate all the things we DON'T HAVE. It's called black friday AFAIK because when accountants kept the books for a business, a profit was written in black and a loss was written in red, so black friday is the day that businesses go into the black because of how much they're selling.
The whole violent masses of people thing is overstated. I've gone to Walmart, best buy, target, etc. On black Friday, and aside from long lines and the occasional impatient asshat, it's not much different than a regular buzzy day in a store.
It probably just gives them good PR by not doing it with Sam's Club and Asda while keeping black friday going for their real money maker (Actual Walmart)
Sam's Club is doing black friday this year, but only on Friday proper instead of thursday.
What "experts" are divided..? Is there such a thing as an expert on Black Friday?
Sam's Club is doing black friday this year, but only on Friday proper instead of thursday.
Ah, that's right. I only heard it briefly on the radio as I wasn't paying attention.
THANK YOU. Black friday has NEVER been a british thing and it's an infruiatingly blatant americanism that does not belong here. Fuelling consumerism and violence between people over products? No thanks.
The fucking thing doesn't belong in America either.
It's like some of you guys seriously think this is a holiday about barbarism. It's literally just a day that prices go super cheap so you can buy what you need for Christmas. People trampling over each other is just what happens when you sell things super cheap apparently. Human nature, I guess? Hardly evil, it's just silly, really. Anywho, 'Cyper Monday' has gotten more popular in recent years so there's that.
blatant americanism that does not belong here.
the fuck [editline]10th November 2015[/editline] i get that black friday causes issues but the wording is still weird
What "experts" are divided..? Is there such a thing as an expert on Black Friday?
economists also black friday isnt a holiday, not even informally. it simply proved to consistently be the most profitable day of the year for retail because of fast approaching christmas, it being a friday following a common payday, and so on. eventually the fact became common knowledge and the term was appropriated for marketing. either way, it's gross.
What is black friday supposed to be about? Celebrating capitalism?
It's a special holiday that happens right after the holiday in which we give thanks for what we already have, where we proceed to trample, drop-kick, shove, punch, shoot, stab, Full-Nelson, etc., other human beings in order to save $13 on a 50" TV and $5 on a Blu-Ray player.
