A Texas minister set himself on fire and died to ‘inspire’ justice
One Monday in June, 79-year-old Charles Moore, a retired United Methodist minister, drove to Grand Saline, Tex., his childhood home town some 70 miles east of Dallas. He pulled into a strip mall parking lot, knelt down on a small piece of foam and doused himself with gasoline.
Then, witnesses said, he set himself on fire.

provided that this is in relation to full legalization of same-sex marriage this is such a horrid waste of life over something that damages absolutely nobody.
he set himself on fire to protest against racism and called on his local community to change and repent
NB this is NOT the guy who said he'd light himself up if gay marriage was federalised. this is a different dude who stood for different causes, be sure to read the article
really, really sorry about that. i should've read the article first, i correct my mistake.
He sure picked an odd time to do it.
Horrible that someone could be filled with so much hate, but i'm glad he's burning himself instead of some innocent gay kid

A mod really should change the title to clarify that this isn't about gay marriage.
lmao read the article, its not that hard
If only he held out for one more week maybe he would've changed his mind.
Was he also a Tibetan monk?
God damn, sounds like a really nice person.
Died for something he believed in, still a horrible way togo.

People should really read the article to clarify that this isn't about gay marriage. What is the point of commenting on a title alone?

Maybe people shouldn't jump to conclusions.

People saw "Texas", "Minister", and "Fire", and jumped to conclusions that man who fought against racism, homophobia, the death penalty, and much more, was a hateful person.
It's unfortunate he chose to end his life, I feel he could have done more good had he still lived. He really had some strong ideas about doing the right thing.
I just hope they dont choose this as a means to shit on his memory by calling him a kook and downplaying the good he's done for his community.

this is from 2014.

Well would you look at that.

It certainly was my first thought, when a thread about a Texas minister lighting himself on fire showed up on the same day gay marriage was legalized, when just a week ago a Texas minister threatened to light himself on fire if gay marriage was legalized.
Really just bad timing on the article coming out a month after it actually happened.
edit: a year after it actually happened
In it, Moore lamented past racism in Grand Saline and beyond. He called on the community to repent and said he was “giving my body to be burned, with love in my heart” for those who were lynched in his home town as well as for those who did the lynching, hoping to address lingering racism.
This story is not what I expected..
Moore had “a conviction that if the Bible stood for anything, it stood for radical inclusiveness,”
Makes you wonder. In Canada the leader that brought us public healthcare was an evangelical prairie preacher and Europe still has Christian liberal parties.
The right has taken over Christianity as a political tool and its a shame.
