The charges against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev included the alleged use of a weapon of mass destruction. Seventeen of the counts against him are punishable by the death penalty or life imprisonment. "Not guilty," the 19-year-old ethnic Chechen Muslim, a naturalized US citizen, said repeatedly as the 30 counts were read out. US authorities say Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and now deceased older brother, Tamerlan, 26, planted two bombs near the finish line of Boston's April 15 marathon. Three people were killed and more than 260 were wounded. The older brother was killed three days later during a shootout with police. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was later found hiding, wounded, in a boat in a suburban backyard. Wednesday's courtroom hearing was packed with victims of the bombings, some of whom needed canes to walk. The bombs, which were packed with metal fragments, resulted in several people losing one or more limbs.
source: http://www.dw.de/alleged-boston-bomber-dzhokhar-tsarnaev-pleads-not-guilty/a-16944103
Civilian definition is different from military
By that definition, a hand grenade is a weapon of mass destruction. It seems ridiculous to me to lump hand grenades and nuclear bombs together in the same category.

-dumb didn't think much-
My guess is that he's hoping to be able to prove some mismanagement or rights violation on the part of the police, invalidating their evidence. It's the only way I can think of for him to not be found guilty.
We're also talking about the civilian concept. If you throw a hand grenade in a crowded subway, you can cause a lot of serious harm to a large group of people.
A hand grenade can cause a hell of alot of damage depending on what's in it. Not destroying a city obviously, but I'd bet some could bring down building with just one.
What? The explosion isn't all that big, what does the damage is the red hot shrapnel. I doubt you could make much of a dent in a building's foundations with two or three.

watch as he wins
