The men were being timed through checkpoints on the Brecon Beacons in temperatures approaching 30C, laden with kit when they were taken ill. The Ministry of Defence and police are both investigating what went wrong after a total of six men had to be rescued by helicopter in the punishing heat. Two died and a third remains seriously ill in hospital. The families of the dead have been informed and their names are expected to be released later today.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-23311651
One of the two soldiers who died during SAS selection training in the Brecon Beacons in Powys has been named by the Ministry of Defence as Lance Corporal Craig Roberts. The 24-year-old from Penrhyn Bay, Conwy, and his fellow reservist died on the hottest day of the year in Wales. A third soldier is seriously ill after the incident thought to involve six soldiers collapsing. Mr Roberts lived in London and was a maths teacher in Lewisham.
did they have water / canteens?
did they have water / canteens?
Most likely. But its hardly going to save you from chronic exertion.
did they have water / canteens?

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said he understood the deaths occurred after the training and preparation phase and right at the start of the selection phase. He also understood that there were extra water supplies available in the area in addition to the water the men were carrying.
It's not that uncommon for people to die during SAS selection, I'm assuming this is news because they died from the heat rather than a gunshot or something.
first person to post how their country is hotter than the uk gets a shiny new title expressing how much of a faggot you are. go.
Avoiding Heat Casualties is a pretty major focus in training I've ever done with the US, I very surprised that a military group like the SAS had this issue in this day and age.
first person to post how their country is hotter than the uk gets a shiny new title expressing how much of a faggot you are. go.
wow this would never happen during navy seals training
Avoiding Heat Casualties is a pretty major focus in training I've ever done with the US, I very surprised that a military group like the SAS had this issue in this day and age.
The whole point in SAS selection is to push yourself to the limits. Sometimes people push themselves beyond that. Also a few months ago, another SAS dude froze to death in the same area.
first person to post how their country is hotter than the uk gets a shiny new title expressing how much of a faggot you are. go.
i'll do it just for the title OMG 30C? BRITS MUST BE WEAK!

ARG for the new Call of Duty rival SAS: Ghosts
Probably not because of the heat. If you're a soldier and can't withstand a temperature of 30C, maybe you should reconsider your line of work.
i'll do it just for the title OMG 30C? BRITS MUST BE WEAK!
I think he means unironically.
I'm not joking when I say that these guys were probably just pussies who pretended to pass out to get out of training. In the US our soldiers would never do that because they understand the honor of being a soldier. (User was banned for this post ("Dumb" - SteveUK)) edit: never even got the fucking title, great.
Probably not because of the heat. If you're a soldier and can't withstand a temperature of 30C, maybe you should reconsider your line of work.
tbh it does seem ridiculous that a soldier would die from this relatively low temperature, but still, we're only used to an average of like 10 degrees celsius all year round, 20 degrees is hot for us and it's when everyone goes out. plus since they were training for sas, you would assume they had heavier loads than regular soldiers and more grueling expectations. on the radio this morning they mentioned that the brecon beacons are chosen purely because of the incline of the slopes and how tough they are to navigate upwards, so there's that. i'm sure us rangers / navy seals die during training also
first person to post how their country is hotter than the uk gets a shiny new title expressing how much of a faggot you are. go.
it's 39 deg C in southern Ontario (that's ~100 F for you imperial fgts)
It's not that uncommon for people to die during SAS selection, I'm assuming this is news because they died from the heat rather than a gunshot or something.
Infact, even one 10 or so plus year veteran of the SAS died when he did a sickener for fun/keeping fit (long march part of SAS Selection training, across rough terrain) in the Brecon Beacons. and that was during "normal" conditions (I say normal, because the weather there can be a bit crazy)
30 celsius is actually pretty low imo, we had much higher last summer. now where is my title
30 celsius is actually pretty low imo, we had much higher last summer.
Even the germans think its weak! - On a serious note though, a lot of specialty soldier training causes either death, serious injury, or permanent disability. In the SEAL training they will have you do thing that could (and have before) get you killed, or DQ'd from ever joining any other branch, ever. I respect their decision to become SAS, but it sucks that they died they way they did. This stuff can be avoided.
first person to post how their country is hotter than the uk gets a shiny new title expressing how much of a faggot you are. go.
well it would be somewhat better then what i have now
SAS selection is really, really tough. I had friends in the Parachute Regiment, the most dickwavy section of the British Army, and they play a part in this phase of selection. They kick the candidates out of a truck and the Paras come screaming out of the woods and are basically told to go nuts. It's not rare to have people hospitalised from this whole ordeal - but that's kind of the idea.

Moral o' the story, don't be a pussy-ass non-'murican.

The ex RMCs are going to come in here and we'll never hear the end of it

Also last I heard, the unofficial motto (and on a plaque on one of the barracks) was "We're not tryign to fail you, we're trying to kill you."
i'm presuming they had a ton of equipment with them adding to the heat. i feel like i'm going to melt running around that type of heat even with light clothing so i cant imagine how hot it was for them.
