I was watching Kill Bill vol 1 again the other day and it occurred to me that Uma Thurman did a damn fine performance, but you will never hear about her performance in the movie simply by merit of the type of movie it is.
This got me thinking about some of the more criminally underrated actors and actresses I've seen in my time who will consistently deliver brilliant performances and yet will not be recognized (or will be with some shitty award *cough*MTV awards*cough*) simply because they aren't the hot item of the times.
Likewise, the Academy awards are meant to signify some of the greatest performances in film, yet I can't help but scratch my head some years.
So post your favorite underrated performances be it in film or TV (fuck me HBO series have had actors more talented than most Oscar winners).
Uma Thurman was pretty popular in the 1990s.
Edie Falco in Sopranos, as Carmella Soprano.
I mean the Sopranos isn't short of talented actors/actresses, but Falco did an consistently incredible job over the years.
Ben Affleck. He's really that type of actor who's got a strong case of "Hit and Miss" where 'Miss' happens more frequently for him.

My favourite performance by him was Bartleby in Dogma.

Gene Hackman in The Conversation,
oscar worthy. definitely.
Arrrghnawld. People say he's a horrible actor but I don't think he's that bad. And even though some admit that he's not that bad, he hasn't really been able to shake that 'Da Musculah Guy Wif Bad Achtin' image.
You seriously saying Arnold Schwarzenegger is under-rated? Everyone knows hes a fucking legend
Many of you may not know of him, but he's extremely talented, and yet no one seems to recognize him in any movies.

Barry Pepper
Apart from me liking the Coen brothers, he was one of the only reasons I went to see True Grit.
Barry Pepper is the tits. Fun fact, he voiced Alex Mercer in prototype.
Barry Pepper is cool. He played Tom Ripley in Ripley Under Ground (a straight to DVD sequel to Ripley's Game)

that dog in the flower shop should get an oscar

Huh, Saving Private Ryan was made by Speilberg. Not the Coen brothers.
Or you meant his role in True Grit.

Whups, thanks for pointing that out. Yes, True Grit is correct.

that guy from battlefield earth?
Brad Pitt
Eric Idle After Monty Python. Almost all of the films he was in after Python were horrible yet i still quite like them.
Tom Sizemore
Guy Pearce
Ralph Fiennes

Arnold can't actually act. This is a fact he acknowledged early in his career and took it face on, working as a producer allowed him to tailor characters and scripts to his strengths.
What he does have however, is very strong screen presence and charisma. Given the right director, Arnold can make fantastic movies (Conan the barbarian, Predator, Terminator, Total Recall)
Sharlto Copley
Ben Foster
Zooey Deschanel
Also that guy who played young dr. evil in Goldmember is a really good actor. He was in the previous season of Desperate Housewives as a teen with horrible parent issues and his performance was amazing. I could see genuine emotion when he acted
Ben Foster
YES. This this, a thousand times this.
It's a pity his first major starring role was a bomb (Pandorum, which is a criminally underrated movie), which would've broken him from his "geeks and freaks" typecasting.
Sharlto Copley
Sharlto Copley isn't really underrated. He's only had two major film roles and he's already on the rise in hollywood. Pretty good considering.

Just checked IMDB about Pepper, he voiced Corporal Dunn.
My favourite performance by him was Bartleby in Dogma.
[img_thumb]http://images.blu-ray.com/reviews/2186_5.jpg[/img_thumb]
My favourite performance by him was Jack Dupree in Smokin' Aces. Albeit he didn't have alot of screentime, he did a very good job at it.
Edie Falco in Sopranos, as Carmella Soprano.
I mean the Sopranos isn't short of talented actors/actresses, but Falco did an consistently incredible job over the years.
On the topic of Sopranos, Lorraine Bracco is fucking brilliant in both the series and Goodfellas.
I'm honestly quite surprised she was never picked up for more major roles.
Ben Foster 3:10 To Yuma.
He was my favorite part of 30 Days of Night.
Lennie James. Amazing actor in everything I've seen him in, really good. I don't see him in much, though. I never knew he was English, he pulls off an American accent amazingly.
Gary Oldman. Seriously, he's like totally unrecognizable in this movie compared to his usual characters.
