CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Singer John Denver never called West Virginia home, but his 1970s hit “Take Me Home, Country Roads” is one of the state’s official songs. Forty-three years after it first hit the airwaves with the words “Almost Heaven, West Virginia,” the Legislature approved a resolution Friday designating it as one of four state songs. The song has resonated with residents for decades. It’s played after every West Virginia University basketball and football game. Denver sang it in person at the dedication of Mountaineer Field in Morgantown in 1980. The state song effort was started two years ago by the widow of “Gilligan’s Island” actor Bob Denver, who is no relation.
Source [editline]9th March 2014[/editline]
I've been in West Virginia. If by "Country Roads" they mean "Riddled with pot holes and only half paved" they hit the nail on the head.
John Denver is p. cool
I'm surprised this wasn't done sooner/already a state song.

Alabama, represent! In all honesty, are there any West Virginians who want to reunite with Virginia?
Despite living in Colorado, I know next to nothing about John Denver. Hm.

People in my neighborhood have been filling holes with rocks and broken up sticks :v:
Great artist, kick ass use of his music
West Virginian here! It's about time, they pretty much spam it after any important event
Woot! I always loved John Denver's music.
I feel bad for forgetting about John Denver and his music. Leaving on a Jetplane + Country Roads and many more, god tier.

Man, some other state should've already picked it, just to fuck with West Virginia. :v:
sounds like a nice song
I voted for 'Go West'.
I've lived in West Virginia my whole life, but I'm moving this summer. I can't relate to any girls here, and the water crisis is getting sketchier every day.
Now I'm curious about what makes West Virginian women stand out.
"Mudding"
"Mudding"
God I used to love me some country girls. Better than castrating calves.
"Mudding"
I'm thinking skat or race mixing now. Please explain further.
I'm thinking skat or race mixing now. Please explain further.
West Virginia is like 75% forest and woods. Pretty much everyone in my area is a 5 minute drive from somewhere they can take ATVs or big trucks on a muddy trail and get obscenely dirty. That's pretty much what mudding is.

I'm honestly surprised this didn't happen sooner, since I still remember the travel ads they used to air that had this song on them. Do they still air them?

I like Hermes House Band's cover of this song.
No, don't let them re-unite with us REAL Virginians!
It'd make it easier for me to tell people what state I lived in. "Western Virginia? Where in Virginia?"
I first heard this song in a Japanese version from a Ghibli movie I watched with my family one time. Very nice song.
If you've ever been to WVU and have ridden the bus's that take you around at night, you know this song by heart :v:
