The center of a Quebec town has been wiped out, according to the mayor, after a runaway freight train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded in a fireball at 1am on Saturday. One person was killed and about 30 buildings were destroyed as the unmanned train exploded. About 60 people are believed to be missing, but the force of the fire has slowed rescue efforts. Parts of the town were evacuated in the early hours as fireballs shot several metres in the air, flames spread to nearby homes and thick acrid smoke filled the air in Lac-Megantic, which is close to the Maine border and about 250km from Montreal.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2357352/Breaking-news-Canadian-town-center-wiped-freight-train-carrying-hundreds-tons-crude-oil-derails-explodes.html Hopefully the sixty missing are just that, missing for now, and not dead, my heart goes out to the residents of Lac Megantic.
Looks like a scene out of a movie
That picture is surreal
What a coincidence that 60 people are also missing, I guess they have to cancel the search party for this though.
goddamn
thats crazy
Oh God.. I hope each of those 60 missing people are alive :/
Damn that shit looks like a Nevada nuclear test, extremely surreal.
Jesus christ, Today is just a conga-line of disasters.
Jesus christ, This year is just a conga-line of disasters.
ftfy. :( [editline]6th July 2013[/editline] Hope they find all the people in that are missing.
Chances are they will find them, wether or not they will be alive is another story. I could only imagine how loud of an explosion that would of been.
Witnesses said the blast flattened an apartment building and part of a bar, which had a terrace packed with people at the time of the fire, according to CBC.
:(
Well at least it wasn't a nuclear reactor train
Well at least it wasn't a nuclear reactor train
those can withstand direct fighter jet impacts I would not have been as worried
This is completely devastating, I hope the death count doesn't go higher
I would ask if there is anyone on Facepunch who saw this first hand, but their internet probably got wrecked as well.
I recall reading a news story a while ago about some suspicious individual who was taking a lot of footage of trains. No doubt doing research.
Well at least it wasn't a nuclear reactor train
If it was it wouldn't have exploded.
Time to ban trains. (User was banned for this post ("Time to ban you" - Starpluck))
Fuck you'd probably think it was a nuclear blast or something. Scary shit.
Time to ban trains.
Why stop at trains, they need to ban busses.
Aujourd'hui, nous sommes en deuil avec notre frères et soeurs dans Lac-Mégantic. J'offre mon condoléances de les personnes qui ont été affectes par cette tragédie. <3
All the pictures of accidental explosions on the news make the incidents in question look like a cross between Mars, Hell and a few dozen atomic bombs. I hope those missing are found alive, but it seems unlikely if the blast flattened buildings.
If I saw that damn explosion I'd have thought that Nuclear war broke out.....
those can withstand direct fighter jet impacts I would not have been as worried
"But nuclear!" :downs:
