Days after a box turtle was found duct-taped to a bundle of balloons caught in an Oceanside tree, officials were still searching for the culprit — and residents had harsh words for whoever was responsible. Chanelle Wright first spotted the trapped turtle dangling in the breeze Sunday afternoon, the red and green balloons stuck high in the branches of her neighbor's eucalyptus tree. "He was swinging his arms trying to get out of it," Wright told 10News. "Somebody had taped him to the balloons." Wright called the Oceanside Humane Society and firefighters arrived to help free the turtle. Just as they were about to rescue it, the television station reported, a gust of wind carried the wayward reptile down to the ground. The reptile was taken to the Oceanside Humane Society as officials investigate the incident. Residents who watched the rescue told 10News they were outraged by the turtle's treatment. "It's animal abuse," Wright said. "If you didn't want the turtle, give it away, take it to a pet store." "What were you thinking? I mean, a turtle is still life," Joel Rabago said. "There's no reason to be putting him up in a balloon and sending him off."
Read the related articles in the source too.
Space Turtle Program 2012 was a disaster.
That's...why?
Although this is cruel, this turtle has done what no turtle has done before. It has flown. It has been amongst the birds. It has gone faster than most of its kind have ever achieved. It has seen the land upon which it previously only saw a tiny fraction of through a window. And it has survived the voyage. Alone. I salute you, flying turtle.
Reminds me of that thing on 4chan where a guys scorpion was a total pussy and wouldn;t sting shit so they tied it to a bunch of balloons and flew him around the house to harden it up, now it stings everyone. More to the topic at hand though what the fuck, turtles are the shit, why would you not want a turtle.
Hasn't someone done this before but with a toad?

meanwhile in africa...
Space. The final frontier.
This pisses me off more than it probably should, but I have a soft spot for turtles.
Don't you own like 50 turtles
Currently Five adult and three juvenile box turtles. Four Common snapping turtles. Five red-eared sliders. Nine eastern painted. As well as 2 red-footed tortoises. I have four more arriving soon, not sure what kind. But I do not keep most of my turtles long, most are released. I have a few that require special attention that will be in captivity forever. I have several pools, tanks, and ponds which the turtles stay in based on size, type, and health. This guy was brought to me with a fish hook injury and kept in a pool until I could be sure he was eating, then he was moved to a larger pond. I also do some catch and release herping, it is fun just to see the little ones in the summer. Our turtle escaped us two weeks ago (please don't ask how). Looks like he found a way to get over the ocean, after all.
I had a turtle who escaped when I was 10 or younger. I thought, "Oh, he'll never get anywhere!" Then I forgot about him.
I'll be completely honest with you I imagined a mutated turtle with wings I seriously did
I'd need more balloons for my turtle. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/0lSW7.jpg[/img_thumb]
Damn it, came into the thread expecting turtles with wings. Two posts late. So close.

Wikipedia actually explains it well... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle#Turtle.2C_tortoise.2C_or_terrapin
