It starts as mid-level drug dealer, D'Angelo Barksdale beats a murder rap. After a conversation with a judge, Det. James McNulty has been assigned to lead a joint homicide and narcotics team, in order to bring down drug kingpin Avon Barksdale. Avon Barksdale, accompanied by his right-hand man Stringer Bell, enforcer Wee-Bey and many lieutenants (including his own nephew, D'Angelo Barksdale), has to deal with law enforcement, informants in his own camp, and competition with a local rival, Omar, who's been robbing Barksdale's dealers and reselling the drugs. The supervisor of the investigation, Lt. Cedric Daniels, has to deal with his own problems, such as a corrupt bureaucracy, some of his detectives beating suspects, hard-headed but determined Det. McNulty, and a blackmailing deputy. The show depicts the lives of every part of the drug "food chain", from junkies to dealers, and from cops to politicians.
I'm planning on diving headfirst into this show and getting ahold of the box set once I'm done with Twin Peaks. Who here has seen it, and what are your opinions? It has some fucking amazing reviews and the plot sounds excellent.
I'm from Baltimore but two months ago, I moved to Australia for a year long work visa. :D Whenever I'm homesick, I watch this show. The Wire is a pretty damn good representation of how fucked up that city can be. The city itself isn't exactly as bad as they make it out to seem, but it is generally focused on the bad side of town, so it is understandable. Overall, I think they got the general personality/feel of the city perfect. I love how the accents, the lingo, the way people dress and even the beers they drink are all full of little quirky things you only see in Baltimore. Its definitely impressive how they added so many details that were surely to go largely unnoticed. I hope I don't sound biased just because of where I'm from, but simply as a TV show, The Wire is good too. I honestly think it is as good as the general hype says it is. The characters (even the criminals) are all so well developed and generally lay in that "grey area" that keeps them interesting, unpredictable, and most importantly... human. You'll find yourself shifting between loving and hating different characters as the show progresses, mainly due to the fact that they actually change and grow with the story and their related experiences. But generally, it is a safe bet that McNulty is the fucking man and you will love him regardless. It's best to break down the story by the seasons, but its better to not go into detail and just let you watch it for yourself. The first season is all you'll need to see to decide if the show is for you or not. It has a well written ending that kind of wraps the whole thing together as a good ending point. Its as if they made The Wire originally as a mini-series without definitely knowing there was going to be another season. But if you plan on watching past that, expect yourself to keep up with the entire show. Most people I know think season two was a bit boring. I personally liked it, but whatever. It feels more like a side story to the whole drug ring that is focused on in the rest of the series. Most people also say that Season 4 is one of the best things ever seen on television. So it's worth hanging in until then to see for yourself. Oh yeah, Omar is a fucking legend.
godfuckingdammit this show is so good started watching it a couple weeks ago, some reason haven't watched them for a while, but i only have one episode left of the first season. it's an awesome cop drama with less drama and more gritty urban shit. i usually end up talking like Deangelo Barksdale for several hours after watching an episode.
my friends keep telling me to watch this I think I probably should do so

One of the few tv-series worth re-watching. There's so much going on in every episode that you just discover new things all the time.
I never knew why everyone went on about this show. And then I watched it. Oh my god it is the best thing ever, its an actual show where you don't know what will happen next. When [sp]Bodie died and then Omar[/sp] I really couldn't believe it. So fucking good. Grr I have an erection

I fucking love omars argument to the lawyer. One of the most memorable and smartest lines in TV history.
"A good church man is always up in everybody's shit"
I bought a boxset of the whole series and the packaging sucks. The show is very good but they could have done better with the packaging for this thing.
What is yours like? I think it's pretty good?
I watched this show in its entirety in a period of 2 months or so. It is definitely one of my favorite shows and is up there with HBOs best work like Six Feet Under and The Sopranos. One thing you should know each season deals with a different facet of the city it's based in, Baltimore. The facets go in this order (this does not spoil anything): Drug Trade Seaport System City Government School System News media Throughout the series the drug trade aspect for the most part stays in the show past season one. Also after season 3, the city government aspect stays as well after its introduced. 3 & 4 are the best season in my opinion, and season 2 is the worst, which isn't to say its bad, the seaport system and its characters just weren't too interesting to me. tl;dr Shows fucking great, you're lucky to experience it for the first time
What is yours like? I think it's pretty good?
The flat seasons that fold out and the CDs in the slots that keep falling out.
Oh mine never do that. And my least favourite was the last one, probably because i didn't like the shit McNulty was going towards.
best show
<3 omar for live
