Google Chrome neutralized the AdBlock Plus application, and similar extensions, forcing some users to view full-length video ads on YouTube.
Source I didn't even notice this, as I used firefox, but people been bitching about all day.
Well it was good while it lasted
I haven't noticed it either. Ads aren't playing for me at all.
Ain't noticed nothing and I'm on chrome.
thank god for multiple methods of blocking ads I'm not doing that bullshit. ads are the fucking worst
So temporarily some Chrome users will have to watch ads until Adblock finds a way to circumvent it. ok.
Just uninstall the Youtube app from Chrome if this happens.
Running uBlock on Waterfox, still working like a charm. Kinda glad I stopped using Chrome now, I remember when they suddenly decided to ban non-store extensions and that broke a lot of extensions for me.
If you want to circumvent their circumvent, use this filter. Works like a charm for me.
youtube.com##video[src="blob:https%3A//www.youtube.com/eac9235f-3159-4e72-946c-3c22db48290a"]
couldn't google prevent this across the board by simply appending the video to the ad and showing it as one vid?
Update: We have been contacted by Rob Wu, a developer on the Chromium project - the open-source foundation for the Chrome browser - who has informed us that this change was not intentional but, rather, an unintended result of fixing a previous security issue (CVE-2015-1297). He confirmed that the issue will only be seen if the YouTube app is installed and that, at the moment, apart from disabling AdBlock or whitelisting YouTube, the only solution, as described above, is to uninstall the app. The problem is expected to be patched in the upcoming weeks or, at least, when Chrome 46 is released. This is a week old and I haven't gotten a single ad
Noticed this on my chromebook, desktop is fine
Haven't noticed it yet. Then again i'm running both adblock and adblock plus
Gee, I wonder how long it'll take before the applications just update to ignore the safeguard.
Cool. I just set up a proxy server that blocks ads before they even get to my computer. Fuck you google.
uninstall the youtube app that comes with the chrome browser Chrome://apps right click youtube app and uninstall. fixed
I have AdBlock Plus and the youtube app, not showing any ads on youtube at all.
couldn't google prevent this across the board by simply appending the video to the ad and showing it as one vid?
no because ads are put on regionally
I didn't notice any YouTube ads in the app with the YouTube Ad Away Xposed module
I really don't mind youtube video ads, they're legitimate ads that are either short or skippable, I just hate obvious phishing scam ads or the drive by malware in some of them. If ads were regulated to always be trustworthy and reputable then I wouldn't even use ad block, most of the annoying ads are the scams anyway.
Doesn't bother me because ublock isn't effected, dunno why people still use adblock.
I have not noticed any ads yet but there are more blockers than adBlock, some are dedicated just for YouTube. This is just cutting the head off a hydra.
no ads... on the youtube website... the app version however.
What is the difference between the app and the website? It looks like the app just takes you to the website.
http://www.neowin.net/news/google-chrome-reportedly-bypassing-adblock-forces-users-to-watch-full-length-video-ads https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=526413
Its pretty chill that while this looks deliberate from Google to get people to watch ads on YouTube, they still reach out to the very people working against it saying it was unintended.
Doesn't bother me because ublock isn't effected, dunno why people still use adblock.
If you look at the bug report uBlock is affected. Its just a bug in Chromium, the open source base for Chrome. Its apparently fixed in a new build that will be pushed out soon. Sensationalist headlines... definitely the most apt description for most news articles these days.
Got worried by the thread title thinking this would affect me on Firefox. Luckily I'm fine for now.
I've got uBlock and haven't noticed ads(at least not yet), thank god.
The sheer number of people not reading the thread before posting is astonishing.
