Most of us should be aware by now that Devianart is dying. It is plagued with crappy drawings, pictures taken in the mirror, "artistic" photos that are just regular pictures desaturated in Photoshop, and so much furry it isn't funny. So with this, I pose the question, is there a replacement for Deviantart? Maybe something where to upload you must prove your artistic talent, or maybe you have to be vetoed by an existing member?
So Facepunch, does such a place exist?
conceptart.org
sadly the only option
[editline]18th July 2011[/editline]
tho conceptart is very good, it's hard to get any feedback.
I was tempted to try and make such a site but didn't think there was enough demand for it.
I doubt conceptart allows photography...
I could be wrong though

Do it, make crappy photos that are ~deep~ and crap drawings - furry etc bannable offences.
I only see dA as the main way to get popularity on your works, no matter how crappy the community is.
It is kinda shitty at times, because there are a lot of great artist and people who have create potential but it is hard to get feedback and criticism because they lack the popularity/friends on that site because they're not crazy attention whores.
I actually stopped posting shit on DA due to that, it is bullshit that a somewhat decent photo gets less attention and some shitty furry picture gets all the attention.
Oh well I suppose.
Do it, make crappy photos that are ~deep~ and crap drawings - furry etc bannable offences.
I was going to make it applicant based perhaps letting existing members vote on it to stop 5 second shit being put up but never decided. Also, I suck at thinking up names. :v:
Yes I have been dreading devart lately. Please Emz, make the site!
I was tempted to try and make such a site but didn't think there was enough demand for it.
If you did that I would happily donate towards it.
I would too
I'll give it a shot then I guess. If anyone has any ideas just PM me or message me on Steam.
Edit: although it seems a few exist, I may make one for fun anyway. :v:
IMO, a system with private uploads would work well. Every times you try uploading art publicly, it should go through an moderating/admin system who would decide to greenlight it or otherwise. The only problem with it, is that DevArt size community would be impossible to control - but on the other side, since around 75% of DevArt community is shit art, the size of the community would be smaller and easier to control.
is sheezy art still around
is sheezy art still around
A friend mentioned it, said it was pretty crappy these days
is sheezy art still around
It's worse than deviantART.
is sheezy art still around
I just checked that, it's like DA but without anything other than the animes.

You do get better feedback on SA though.
At least, shezzy art had the good move to ban Preston from here.
It'd be nice if there were different sections for different quality photos/pictures.

What would determine quality?
Voters?

But this is just in case Gufu's ideas is actually going to be realized.
I dont even understand why furry is so popular on DA - they already have their own furry-specific art sites that most of the fandom "hangs out" at from what I've seen.
I'm guessing its because DA has such a large amount of tween appeal (like myspace of yesteryear) that contributes to a lot of the tween furry demigraphic going to it :\ Which explains a lot of the anime and terribad drawings its known for too.

This has a problem of having huge abuse potentual though. What if something that is genuninely pretty cool, or a WIP doesn't happen to fancy a reviewer's style and thus gets rejected? Or what if there just isn't enough volunteer manpower to put something like this?
A far better way, if this were to be a clone of DA except without the shit, would for it to be designed in a manner that encourages artists to join, much like how tweens don't really go to conceptart.org. The design should compliment what you want from the website. And since tween artists already have a "home" at deviant art I doubt they'd really need a reason to join "other art website that is very well designed to encourage a different demographic".
Unless this isn't going to be a clone of DA. It could be pretty interesting to do an art website that works kind of like FML, in that art is submitted and it is voted on anonymously by the masses, and only a select few go to the editors which they approve. Would work pretty interesting for art and art profiles just from a fun "Hey, I got featured on X!" sense. Wouldn't be efficent nor good to do this from a standard artist-networking type site though.
Having art go through a selction process would not encourage people to join simply because it adds a layer of beurocracy and red tape when what you really want is to just quicky upload something and have exposure without strings attached. Sure there is no garuntee to avoid people from uploading 2 second shit. But if you have a website that discourages posting of such thing via its design and how it promotes artwork, then this can be easily avoided. Hell you could even have a rule that states "real efforts only except if it is in a scraps section", and allow people to report artwork that doesn't qualify for this.
Would be much more efficent and user friendly than forcing each submitted artwork to go through a probably long submission process of being reviewed for quality. There is no way the website would sustain itself for more than a few months, because there is no way that you'd get enough volunteers to keep the website alive that long to the point where it is fast enough that people want to use it.

Thing is as the community gets larger the staff wouldn't be able to get on top of all the requests. How about a system where you can 'like' or 'dislike' art, and if it gets enough people disliking it, it alerts a member of staff and then they can choose whether to keep it on the site or not.
conceptart.org
The average art level on that site is skyrocket high, you'd need to be a professional and/or dedicate your life to drawing if you'd like to blend in as an average user on that kind of site

I agree that making all images have moderator approval would be a nuisance. Images that would be featured (like a DD) could be a voting process rather than someone's suggestion like I think it is on DA. Perhaps, like you say, anyone can submit art (and people can report it if it's 5 second shit) and then if a piece has x% good votes and at least x amount of votes total then it becomes a featured image. All other images are viewable as normal by browsing galleries with different filters for what type of art you're viewing.
Perhaps if you get x amount of featured images you get a special status of some kind which means if people just want to look at the art by these people they can (and perhaps they have larger file limits or something) but then again this may cause user segregation and usually that just causes problems.

There are a lot of people who start at the very beginning on that site. I'm personally far from having professional level skills, but the people there are helpful and accepting regardless.

and that's how it should be
