Sony has posted a net loss of 158 billion yen (£1.3 billion) for its third financial quarter ended December 31, 2011, compared to a profit of 72.3 billion yen (£559 million) a year ago

The firm said sales fell 17.4 percent year-over-year to 1.82 trillion yen (£15 billion), "primarily due to the impact of the floods in Thailand, deterioration in market conditions in developed countries, and unfavourable foreign exchange rates".
The Consumer Products and Services division - which houses Sony's PlayStation, TV, video, digital imaging, PC and mobile businesses - recorded a quarterly operating loss of 85.7 billion yen (£710.3 million), versus a profit of 63.5 billion yen (£526.3 million) for the same period last year. Sales fell 24.4 percent to 996.5 billion yen (£8.3 billion)
Sony said: "Categories contributing to the deterioration in operating results... include LCD televisions, reflecting a decline in unit selling prices that exceeded cost and expense reductions, and the game business, reflecting higher marketing costs to promote network service platforms and lower sales of PlayStation 3 hardware due to a strategic price reduction."
The firm sold 6.5 million PS3s during the quarter, up from 6.3 million a year earlier, as well as 2.4 million PSPs, down from 3.6 million, and 900,000 PS2s, down from 2.1 million.
It also sold 66.2 million PS3 games, up from 57.6 million during the same period last year, 11.4 million PSP titles, down from 16.5 million, and 2.5 million PS2 games, down from 5.3 million.
Former PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai will succeed Howard Stringer as president and CEO of Sony on April 1.
that's too bad.
Apparently this is 1.3 billion pounds, that's ~2 billion US dollars, at least according to some other post.

According to this article it's actually $2.9 billion, I'm confused.
As people are keen on forgetting, this is not terribly much. It's the same for that Nintendo article, you guys see LOSS and don't actually read the financial statements to realize they spend more than they lost on R&D casually.
¥204.9 on expansion and ¥426.8 on R&D make ¥159 gone seem a lot less significant.

That's a forecast, they start off with the same ~$2bil.
That's okay, when the Vita flops (which it will) Sony is going to make PSN+ a requirement to make up for the money it's lost. GG Sony.

It flopped in Japan, surely that means it will flop everywhere!
It'll probably sell like the PS3, very slowly at first, then suddenly increase in sales as the price drops.

Considering the reason it flopped was because Sony didn't put any effort into it, I highly doubt they can save it with a few good games. Look at the PSP, it has no games. I own about 8-10 PSP games and have only ever enjoyed maybe 3 or 4.

The PSP wasn't exactly supported by developers in the first place. Being Sony's first foray into handheld gaming for some time, developers were obviously a bit uneasy with supporting it. Nintendo on the other hand had been developing handhelds for years, with great sales, kind of obvious which one to pick really.
Oh, and the UMD format was fucking terrible. Which is a great offput.
Vita will do better in the rest of the world then in Japan, I would bet money on it. Will it sell of the shelves here? Doubtful, but the lineup of games seems tailor made for US/UK, so yeah.
A PS Vita game broke into the top 20 list for the first time since the system's Japanese launch seven weeks ago (the chart does not include digital sales via PlayStation Network), with Namco Bandai's Tales of Innocence R selling almost 55,000 units and appearing in the #3 spot.

Though it appeared that PS Vita's hardware sales would continue to slide two weeks ago and fall below 15,000 units, the new handheld did get a slight boost last week and moved almost 19,000 systems -- not a significant change, but that was enough for the system to outsell PSP for the first time since its launch.
All they need to do is release a Monster Hunter over there and it should get out of the slump it's currently in.

Say what you want about the PSP in US/UK, but it was largely successful in Japan.

Well duh. Japan gets better games than we do most of the time. Even Nintendo screwed their fanbase over by not bringing some titles over to the US.
People still buy PS2s?

It didn't flop, but it wasn't a huge success in comparison to the 3DS sales. It sold 500,000 units after one week (?) and their memory cards were sold out at day 1.
People still buy PS2s?
I bought one not so long a go, 99$ and I get to play all of my old awesome games!
The PS Vita is not a smartphone, it won't sell well in the US.

That's a dumb opinion. It will sell well because it actually has a good lineup of games.
I fucking want zone of the enders HD collection on it.
In other news, I really don't get why it's such a surprise when a company doesnt have a super rise in yearly profits.

I doubt it's going to sell well. People are currently in a state of brainwash, and think that their iPhones/S2s are enough to play these games.
People still buy PS2s?
I love the PS2, I'm not joking either I play it everyday
People still buy PS2s?
This is what I thought until like a week ago when I visited a relative's home and saw that they had a newly released sports game for their PS2
I was just surprised that it's being used when even the PS3 is outdated now
People still buy PS2s?
What's wrong with Playstation 2? Games are still work of art and they're even cheaper now, some even a dollar a pop. RIP Monster Hunter 1
"primarily due to the impact of the floods in Thailand, deterioration in market conditions in developed countries, and unfavourable foreign exchange rates"
Oh, so vague. What about that ridiculous credit card fiasco Sony?
They skimped so much on the PS3 with what could have been a great system. As well as the, now-defunct PSP; even perhaps the upcoming Vita.
I mean come on, PS3 doesn't have all that great of functionality despite it's hardware capability. The PSP went derp when they decided to go on their own proprietary format instead of embracing the growing, digital download era. Only now do they develop Vita which is far late into the game with all the features the PSP should have had, (cough analog sticks lol)
Only thing that I hate about the PS2 is how it is getting increasingly difficult to buy games for it.
Loads of my local game retailers have dropped PS2 titles completely, and the ones that haven't only have used titles for 10 bucks.
So, my only real source of PS2 games is yard sales.
i haven't even heard of the vita until it didn't do well in japan
Its kinda funny, I want to say PS3 and PSN are the issue for them.
I know a lot of people stand by PSN due to the fact it is free, however after doing their premium version of PSN I can easily say it has not changed much and has little to offer compared to XBL. Yes you have to pay for XBL but for the most part features, DLC, demos are always being added regularly. On top of that XBL has always been pretty stable and no real issues to complain off.
PSN could be so much more, but it isn't. Sadly enough due to the few exclusives PS3 offers my PS3 has become a glorified blu-ray player and nothing more. Glad I never paid for it, it came free with my new sony tv.
As for the PSP it is a great little hand-held device. It has a lot of power if they wouldn't be keen on keeping it locked down. Allow people to develop for it and do shit. Homebrew and custom firmware is what my PSP useful. The fact i can play PSX games on it and various other things made it awesome. if it wasn't for that I would have sold my PSP a long time ago.
Sony really needs to do something that is more or so stable and actually affordable next time. I hope they learn from their mistakes with the PS3 and make the next playstation a hit. I loved PSX and PS2 but PS3 left a bad taste in my mouth per say.
Then again the economy is kinda rough and people don't have money to spend on countless systems. I think all sales are down for consoles and handhelds for the most part if I'm correct. Last year was kinda stagnant when it came to new releases and hot titles.
Do even consoles have anything to do with this, if anything it should be the profitable part of the company.

It was a "flop" in Japan because of the strong yen, the lack of appealing games for the average Japanese gamer(JRPGs and shit) and people were still buying the PSP because of all the games. And saying Sony didn't put any effort into the Vita is sheer ignorance.
What I still don't understand is why they stopped having the PS3 compatible with the PS2. Doesn't make any sense to me. My PS3 is able to run PS2 games just fine, got it not long after it's been released.

I remember that it was the reason why the PS3s were expensive at release. PS2s were expensive to manufacture.
