I would assume the laws would have to change just so it becomes illegal to have blueprints of a gun on your computer without proper and restricted licensing.
"It will be the next frontier in IP [Intellectual Property] theft when you are able to manufacture a Rolex watch, Gucci handbags, Nike sneakers," he said.
What. Don't these things mainly gain their value from the fact that they are brand products?
And wtf, "next frontier"? So you're telling me they aren't already faking them in the millions, they need 3D printers for that...?
"Head of the Future Crimes Institute", ok.

I don't know about US laws, but weapons in Germany get classified by (I think muzzle-)energy, so if you'd build a weapon by printing the parts, it would be as illegal owning it as a manufactured one (without license, of course). I think the energy approach is quite reasonable.
Are US laws only regulating purchase or possession as well?
Now we'll just how to figure out how to download one
It's easy to download one - Pirate bay. They even have an entire subsection devoted to 3d printables.
As for the software: any engineer should have solidworks, if not that's also obtainable from the pirate bay. (You can get it for free if you are an engineering student at university)
I think you just missed the joke
"How do governments behave if they must one day operate on the assumption that any and every citizen has near instant access to a firearm through the internet?"
Yeah, that is a gross exaggeration.
Government laws on the manufacture of guns will need quick revision to catch up with the age of 3D printing, thinks Marc Goodman, head of the Future Crimes Institute.
Future Crimes Institute; what, is this Minority Report?
This guy is simply a gunsmith and any gunsmith can make a weapon without any outside agency knowing; this is simply a matter of convince.
I think you just missed the joke
This whole situation is a joke, you are simply downloading coordinates and dimensions; the joke is on the people who print, what they think, is the weapon of the future and have a frame that melts onto the barrel or explodes, which is not honestly funny.
But it's not illegal to make you own gun in the US, so they shouldn't have taken the printer, talk about fucking stupid
But it's not illegal to make you own gun in the US, so they shouldn't have taken the printer, talk about fucking stupid
the company that was leasing him the printer seized because they were afraid of being held liable in a situation that isn't quite clearly defined because it's still new technology and US laws in general are outdated as fuck
it's not the government taking it away, it's the company he leased it from, and honestly i don't blame them
if i was a large company like them i wouldn't want to risk getting sued or even shut down because of our shitty outdated laws
They are trying to protect their brand, Who wants to be the first supplier of a 3D printer that printed a gun.
I don't see how you can be pro people fabricating things whose sole purpose is to destroy. It's not usable for sport shooting since their durability sucks.
It can only contribute to people getting hurt. If you want freedom of 3D printing, print a swastika or a picture of Mohammed. Saying that the seizing is an attack on freedom is like saying that taking CP pics is an attack on artistic freedom.
guns are for pussais
i'll just print a knife
yeah
I would totally download a gun.
I would totally download a gun.
I never actually considered that that commercial would ever be relevant to anything.
Now we'll just how to figure out how to download one
The pirate bay used to have a "working" AR15 that you could print. It disappeared a few days after it got uploaded.
You can still download a car though.
It was just the lower receiver of one.
Nothing that needs to widthstand the tremendous forces exerted when the gun's fired.

the receiver is still up and downloadable

Maybe not, but it's the only part that is actually regulated. After printing it, you can get all the other bits with not more than a credit card and a visit to e-bay and other sites (or just a wad of money and a gun shop) no license of any sort required.
I'm confused, don't 3D printers print stuff in something like styrofoam?
How do you make a gun with that?
How can you make plastic gun which works? surely without metal parts it would just explode in the shooters hands?
How can you make plastic gun which works? surely without metal parts it would just explode in the shooters hands?
Some guy 3D Printed an AR15 lower and got it to work, but it would only cycle .22, not .223
How can you make plastic gun which works? surely without metal parts it would just explode in the shooters hands?
Newer 3D printers can print in very resistant ABS plastic, and some even print using metal. Most of the designs for these guns call for some metal bits like the inner barrel and some mechanisms, because the idea isn't a gun that you can entirely print, it's making a gun out of printed parts and other common materials.
Hell, people used to make guns with coffee maker brass pipes and rubberbands. And I think the Russians made a (disposable) all-plastic gun.
the receiver is still up and downloadable
My bad, I just seem to be unable to find it then.
Edit: Just looked and found it, I am sure it disappeared for a while.
