Professor X take note: the WHILL is one snazzy wheelchair accessory. The latest in innovative solutions for people with physical disabilities, this crazy-looking device made by the Japanese company of the same name attaches to any standard wheelchair and turns it into an electric vehicle, allowing the user to navigate with environmentally-friendly ease.
While the WHILL might look like a giant pair of headphones, it's actually more akin to a Segway. Two hubs clamp onto the wheelchair's wheels, and are connected via a curved control arm that passes over the user's waist. Each hub contains a 24-volt motor powered by a lithium ion battery pack. The user steers by leaning in the direction they want to go, much like piloting a Segway.
The batteries take about two hours to charge, and one charge will take you about 19 miles at a top speed of about 12.5 mph. WHILL is currently looking for volunteers to field test its design and provide feedback on the prototype. There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but presumably we'll know more once the current round of testing is complete.

I hope this is cheap, because if it is, my one friend's sister who was handicapped at birth could get one and start zipping around at 12 miles an hour.
That looks so fucking cool. I want one.
just imagine all the old people bandits that'll be zooming past you on the streets
That looks so fucking cool. I want one.
If you want one, I'll even break your legs for you - free of charge!
Must be hard to get into (without help) if you're disabled

Screw that, cut off his legs and they can attach one to his waist and he can roll around without needing that bothersome chair!
Looks like a headset
Looks like a headset
that's what I thought it was at first
that's what I thought it was at first
My mom came in then and thought I was looking a headset too.
I wonder how the people will get in... Lowered by crane?
Looks like if you try to crawl into it from the front, it'll merrily roll over you.
If only I were paralyzed, I'd be so pimpin. In all seriousness though, I would not like to be paralyzed. Just clearing that up.

I'm under the assumption that they get into the wheelchair and then attach the headset thing.
Why does it have a baby retraint bar?

I was thinking it may be where all the controls are but the concept picture doesnt show anything

Read the goddamn article! It acts like a segway and when you move the bar down you go forward, back you slow down and you can also turn by moving it side to side.

"If you wish to arm the machine gun, press - 1 - now."
"If you would like to release the hounds, press - 2 - now."
...
"If you would like to eject, press - 0 - now."
It'll be like Akira
But with old people

?
ohgod
I'd suggest one modification: There should be a button that if pushed will cause spikes to protude out of the hubs.
I bet they cost an arm and a leg.

2 hour charge and 19 miles per charge is not bad at all
time to break my legs
Looks kinda of like a pair of headphones. Either that or it's a wheelchair from the Mass Effect universe; all it needs is the N7 insignia emblazoned on the side.
And of course some element zero to make it just that little bit more high-tech.
I think that crazy thing at the front could be either be:
1) Where all the controls/batteries are held (?)
2) More likely to keep it balanced when moving fast
It looks a little bit like a high-tech chariot.

I'd suggest one modification:

I don't get how this can be safe at all with those small wheels at the front
Too bad it will be very expensive.
