Ukraine says Russia has cut off all gas supplies to Kiev, in a major escalation of a dispute between the two nations.
"Gas supplies to Ukraine have been reduced to zero," Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuri Prodan said.
Russia's state-owned gas giant Gazprom said Ukraine had to pay upfront for its gas supplies, after Kiev failed to settle its huge debt.
Gazprom had asked Kiev to pay $1.95bn (£1.15bn) of the $4.5bn it said it was owed by 06:00 GMT.
The company said it would continue to supply gas to Europe, although Gazprom chief Alexei Miller warned there now were "significant" risks for gas transit to the EU via Ukraine.
Ukraine has enough reserves to last until December, according to state gas company Naftogaz.
Russia-Ukraine ties remain tense since Moscow annexed Crimea in February.
Kiev says Moscow backs separatists in the east of the country. Russia denies the charge.
What interesting news... Sicily and Sardinia are no longer part of Italy and East Thrace is no longer part of Turkey.
Say what you want about "evil" Russia, but Ukraine accepted the gas contract, didn't do their part and legitimately faces consequences for it.

Russia hiked up the price after invading Crimea. Kiev said they'd pay if Russia put it back down to the non-inflated price, Russia refused.
Russia is the bad guy here, not Ukraine,

They obviously hiked it to 10 million $$ per cubic meter or something. "non-inflated" price lol, they just removed all discounts that were made specially for Ukraine.

But they already couldn't pay the original price so...

No shit they stopped subsidizing gas for Ukraine, Ukraine broke the deal Russia had with the previous Ukrainian government. Ukraine wanted a price below the European average, Putin dropped $100.50, very close to the European average but they still wouldn't take it. Plus they're heavily indebted, it's a very high risk to take. Why would they sell gas to Ukraine for a unreasonable price and at an unnecessary risk when they could sell it to somebody else?
didn't the IMF basically tell them to take the deal?
They better not fucking start stealing the gas from the European gas pipe, forcing Russia to cut the whole pipeline.

Ukraine was getting gas for like half the normal market price before, it was massively subsidized by Russia.
They also still owe money for fuckton of gas they already took at the previous price.

Russia has to move troops across the pipeline to protect Gazprom assets :tinfoil:
