Source, it's a big article
Now the NCAA gets its say on Penn State. College sports' governing body was expected to deal a series of heavy blows to the Nittany Lions football program on Monday, less than two weeks after a devastating report accused coach Joe Paterno and other top university officials of concealing child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant coach for years to avoid bad publicity. A news conference was scheduled for 9 a.m. in Indianapolis. A multi-year bowl ban, lost scholarships, recruiting limits, probation and a multimillion-dollar fine all seem likely for the program Paterno built into a national power under the slogan of "success with honor." And the NCAA, heavily criticized for its sometimes-ponderous pace in deciding penalties as scandals mounted at Ohio State, Auburn, USC and elsewhere, acted with unprecedented swiftness in arriving at what it called "corrective and punitive" sanctions for a team that is trying to start over with a new coach and a new outlook. The NCAA announced no details Sunday in serving notice that it would indeed weigh in on perhaps the worst scandal in American college sports history. President Mark Emmert cautioned last week that he had not ruled out the possibility of shutting down the football program altogether -- the so-called death penalty, famously used against Southern Methodist a quarter-century ago -- saying he had "never seen anything as egregious" as the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. Eight satellite TV trucks filled the bay directly behind the NCAA headquarters Monday morning and several more were stationed in a nearby parking lot. More than a dozen TV cameras lined the back of the room where the news conference was being held, and more than 70 media credentials were issued.
Edit: The NCAA has also begun to strip them of any titles they had recieved from 1998-2011, remove any and all trophies, ban them from recruiting or playing a bowl game for 4 years.
It's a slap in the face of the kids that gave it their all to win.
It's a slap in the face of the kids that gave it their all to win.
That rest with the penn state administration that participated in the cover up. [editline]23rd July 2012[/editline] Also I believe op is wrong in the statement that they are banned from even playing a game. They are banned from participating in bowl games for four years.

so instead of punishing the administration they punish the administration AND the kids who had nothing to do with it? good job NCAA.
so instead of punishing the administration they punish the administration AND the kids who had nothing to do with it? good job NCAA.
You can replace administration (and coaches) easily. By invoking the students, the NCAA has heavily damaged Penn's reputation and status, ensuring they don't soon forget.
If I heard correctly on the radio, they may also rip football scholarships. Now that's a bit far.
If I heard correctly on the radio, they may also rip football scholarships. Now that's a bit far.
Anyone who already has them wont be affected.
You can replace administration (and coaches) easily. I, for one, am glad that those disgusting innocent college football players have finally got what's coming to them.
Well, it's harsh because the NCAA is saying "If you guys fuck up, you'll end up like Penn St. here, and we all know what happened to Penn St."
You can replace administration (and coaches) easily. Tuition will also be raised to cover the retarded fine.

The scholarship restrictions are ment to hurt their recruiting abilities. And that "retarded fine" is going to help victims of child sex abuse.
penn state football earned 53 million in profit last year so i don't think 60 million will be the worst thing ever.
Yeah for people who think this fine is going to crush the university don't know anything about universities... Small universities often get paid a million dollars or more to play in a football game that they will lose in... These football programs have money to throw around. It is from their own pocket. It isn't like they are taking 60 million away from the music department and selling all their pianos...
Look at one fuck-head did. He ruined the school for everyone, all because he couldn't stop touching little boys. Piece of shit.
Look at one fuck-head did. He ruined the school for everyone, all because he couldn't stop touching little boys. Piece of shit.
It wasn't just one fuck head that did this.

The NCAA is punishing the university those leaders represented. So anger should not be aimed at the NCAA, it should be aimed at Paterno and his buddies. If they had done their duty as per the Clery Act, the university would not be in this position. The students who played well in the past can't have that taken from them, regardless of whether the games are technically forfeited now or not. If you played great, you played great, if you didn't, you didn't, end of story. Current players can go to other schools without penalty. These were extreme crimes being committed on university grounds, there is no way this could be allowed to pass without huge penalties being imposed.
penn state football earned 53 million in profit last year so i don't think 60 million will be the worst thing ever.
$7 million is still a lot of money, though.
$7 million is still a lot of money, though.
Penn state has like a 2 billion dollar endowment and receives a shit load of gift money every year(i'm talking like $100 million), so i think they'll be ok.
