Starting guitar, like, dont even know how to read music starting.

Well, over the past couple weeks, I've been messing around with this guitar we have and then suddenly I asked myself, 'Hey, idiot, you cant play this so why don't you ask an internet forum?" So i did, or am at least. From the thread title you can see that I have almost no past experiences in the musical world, apart from taking some shoddy strings class in 5th grade and trying to learn harmonica.
I'm sure if you're still reading and are thinking about stopping now, please continue on, as it will make your reply much more useful to me and possibly others! Now, you may ask me "You, the idiot yes, why don't you go out and pay invaluable money for lessons on a instrument your not quite sure yet you even WANT to play?" Well if you asked this than I commend you stepping off the short bus from special education and typing on a magic keyboard. But alas this isn't helpful. I'm asking you, you forum dwellers, posters, and newcomers to tell me where to start, I mean where to start without paying money and driving around town hopefully. I have in fact googled this question and have yet to find amiable results, so I'm asking you music-goers out there.
AND THE POST'S PLOT THICKENS
I have another instrument in my home right now that is equally tempting to learn as of the moment.
THE ELECTRIC KEYBOARD
If someone could tell me where to start on this also I would give them a heart to show my affection to them.
TL;DR (Though please do read it) Someone mind telling me where to start on the Guitar or Electric Keyboard that won't cost me much money, if any at all.
Well, since you have a guitar, check out www.justinguitar.com
great site, and check out his beginners course, helped me loads: http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BC-000-BeginnersCourse.php
What kind of guitar is it? An electric guitar, acoustic guitar, or classical guitar? For each you probably want to start out by learning some chords. But then you must ask yourself, what do I want to play?
Electric

Acoustic

Classical

Either classic or acoustic, how can I tell the difference?
Either classic or acoustic, how can I tell the difference?
Classic guitars can ONLY take nylon strings, they have a very distinct twangy sound to them.
String one with steel and watch wood shatter and snap right in front of you.
Well for starts, there's the tabalature or however you spell it, anyways you need to learn the most basic of basic. Imagine this is a guitar neck right here V.
E-------------------------------------------
B------------------------------------------- ( The part )
G------------------------------------------- ( Where you)
D------------------------------------------- ( Strum it)
A-------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------
So this one ^ being the thickest string, k? K, Now remember Every Apple Does Go Bad Eventually.
Ok, so anyways pull up a song you like that has some basic riffs. Like Redemption song, by Bob Marley. tis a good song.

Now the numbers stand for which fret you (hit).
So it would be, Third fret on E string, open string on A string, 2nd fret on A string.
And so on.. There's only so much you can learn without an actual teacher.

You'd be surprised, between tabs, articles, and Youtube lessons there isn't a lot you can't learn.

Talking with friends who play guitar can help a lot, too.

Well, I would say to learn keyboard. In my own theory, if you can play one instrument, you can play any. But use the keyboard to learn your notes. It will help train your ears to learn the pitches, so you can later use them to learn songs easier. It will also help you learn chords faster, train your fingers to stretch, and you can just take all that over to guitar if you want.

I've played euphonium for four years.
I can now shred on the guitar.
I don't think that quite works, buddy. Sorry.

I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with, seeing as how you can play guitar after your previous instrument.
But what I was stating, is that if you know your music theory and where your notes are on an instrument, then you can in theory play any instrument, with practice of course.

That's exactly what I was disagreeing with. Knowing theory and knowing how to play an instrument are two completely different things.
You were suggesting that by knowing any instrument, you could instantly play any other instrument. My point was that while I've played euphonium for years, I can't play guitar. The reason why is in your second paragraph. I don't know where the notes are.
:v:
I never needed a phrase to remember the strings, I just remember them as EADGBE.
Well, aren't you fucking special.

I would actually recommend you play the piano first.
It'll give you a wider and better knowledge on music, as well as a good rhythm and beat sense. The guitar is something you might want to learn later, as you have to realize there is more to it than just pressing down the frets. At first, even on soft strings, your fingers will hurt because of how much you are pressing down, this is not the case with the piano. I suggest you start with piano, but you do whatever you like.
Although, this is coming from someone who has played piano and is playing guitar, but even then, do what you want.

Waste of time if he doesn't want to play piano.
The same could be said the other way around. I started with guitar, so sitting at a piano feels like it would be pretty easy to learn properly.
I can actually play a bit of piano because of music theory from guitar, I know how to play some basic chords and I can easily play some songs from knowing the notes
Just sweep Amaj13(#11,b9) in every position across the fretboard two hundred times each day, and you should be able to pity someone into giving you free lessons.

I started on piano first, and for me it just made things harder. Guitar doesn't really have much in common (playing wise) with piano :v:.
Music theory and reading music can apply to any instrument, but knowing how to actually play one won't help at all in learning the other one. If he wants to learn theory, he doesn't have to do it on a piano.
