• A friend of mine is a notorious tracer. How do I let him know he sucks?

So my friend Hunter has recently discovered the wonder of tracing, and like a little boy who discovers his first pubic hair, he runs around showing it to everyone. Seriously, he shoves his 'drawings' in peoples faces fishing for a positive comment or just anything gratifying. He doesn't know that I know he's tracing, and as far as I can tell no one has figured it out yet. My problem is, how do I get him to stop? This guy doesn't take criticism too well, and I can't imagine what confronting him would do. Here's some of his copies (from his facebook) So how do I let the guy down without breaking his fragile little ego? (Bonus points if you help before 3v3ryb0dy) Thanks in advance
tell him he's shit, thats what i did with a guy in my art class and he's stopped tracing from an OHP only recently.
Show people the exact same image of what he draws/traces
You do what any good friend would do ; tell him to stop
Show people the exact same image of what he draws/traces
He didn't even bother to go through a few pages on Google search before he took something, they're all on the first page.. Just confront him and tell him he sucks. Seriously.
Just confront him and tell him he sucks. Seriously.
"Hey bro, you suck" Seriously, I'm trying to avoid just flat out telling him. With words I'm about as sensitive as a rock , and I'm trying real hard to not upset this guy. [editline]27th January 2011[/editline] To put it simply, I want you guys to put words in my mouth
His tracings are shit anyway.

"Dude. look you just can't get anywhere the way you're doing it, plus if you do it carelessly like you do you could end up in all sorts of legal trouble. Just please stop and do your own. It's better than anything you can anything you could ever trace plus you won't feel guilty." or something [editline]28th January 2011[/editline] can we get in posession of his facebook?
tell him what 3v3rybody said, a small crack to the ego is all this kind of person needs. there are two types of reactions: flat out giving up and losing interest, or striving to get better. either way you've helped him.
If people keep telling him that they are great it will just get worse. Better tell as soon as possible.
Tell him that if he absolutely have to copy stuff it it to learn, not to make personal art. And tell him to get a little self respect.
Tell him, what he is doing is copyright infringement and is not only illegal but sad too. Tell him that what he is doing is not cool and it would be much cooler if he tried to recreate something with his own little twist, that way he will hopefully stop tracing and start recreating. The first step to actually draw things himself. If he can't handle critisism, he will probably ignore it, so be constructive and as positive as you can. Emphasize on the positive. and if there is something negative you do want to say, say it BEFORE you say something positive.
Why do you want him to stop? I mean it's not like hurting you in some way. Maybe what you need to stop is being afraid of people looking down on you. Like you care for this guy, not only you want him to stop boosting his ego but you want to do it in such a way that it is supposedly not going to hurt his ego. Holy shit you are pathetic, at least be honest with yourself.
OP's just jelly that someone who traces gets more credit than op.
going to cry? OP just wants to help.
Show him the originals and tell him the truth. Maybe what you need to do is stop boosting his ego and actually hurt his ego. Hopefully he'll start to appreciate art of others more and be a bit more modest about himself. [editline]...[/editline] But tell it to him in the most respectful way, something like this: 'You trace, you fucking suck stinky balls! Even my left testicle is more talented than you'll ever be!'
Show him the opening of Chasing Amy. "you fucking tracer!"
If he was actually attempting his own drawings and sucking, fair play, give him encouraging words instead of outright telling him he sucks, but seeing as he is definately tracing, knock him down a peg.
I don't see the big deal. People lying about their abilities is pretty common. I also don't see how you have proof that he's tracing because a lot of people use reference images.
Alright, today I pulled him aside in class and said something along the lines of what 3v3ryb0dy said. He basically just shut down and acted like a toddler the rest of class. When the art teacher asked him to draw something he looked over and said 'I don't know, Joe, you think I'm good enough?' Thanks for the help anyways, guys. If he's keeps being a dick about it I'll just post the link to his facebook.

You could have asked him to draw something for you that is can't be traced, like some fantasy creature
You know what I don't understand here? The OP is obsessed with his friend recieving credit for work that isn't his. He asks for advice on how to tell his friend (emphasize) that what he is doing is wrong. 9 out 10 reactions I read are blatant bashings. I wonder if you people (those who feel responsible) have never did something similar like this. I bet you have, and you know why? Because everyone shows this behaviour at some point in their lives. You people should be ashamed of yourselves, being this hypocritical; and that over the internet! Grow up, be mature, and help this guy out with something a little more constructive. Saying "You suck ass you asshole" doesn't work. That is most certainly not the way you treat your friends! If he wishses to trace images or other things, let him. He will challenge himself when he is ready, or he will stop doing it when people stop giving him credit for his "work". Almost always, these things just need a little time. My advice to the OP, as mentioned in my earlier post (in other words) is to challenge your friend. explain to him that if he produces something himself, it will make him feel even better when he gets positive reactions from others. Even if his work isn't half as good as the tracers. /rant
Wokkel. There is a difference between a 7 year old tracing pokemon drawings and showing it off to his friends and a high schooler (or is it even higher?) tracing drawings and showing it off to all his friends and classmates and being proud of it. And if you didn't notice he followed 3v3ryb0dy's advice. He wasn't an asshole at all.
Sad that tracing is a huge part in modern paintings. Local art schools offically teach how to trace with minimal effort.
ITs a pbad way to learn to draw. You don't think on your own you just follow others lines.
From the looks of it he has no idea what he is even trying to replicate. It's just like, well theres a splotch here so I'm gonna scribble something here.
