For quite a while I've wanted to take up photography. The problem is the only camera in my house is shite as well as only being 3.2mega pixels.
Any preference for a cheap camera suitable for starting out?
Edit: Is there any reason I got two bad spellings?
Depends on budget really.
Mega pixels are not everything by the way. Lots of things go in to it.

Well let's pretend I have about £300 absolute max. Also, here's the specs if anyone can be arsed reading them: http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/camera/specification/1404/show.html
You might want to look in to a Canon EOS XS - It is a little outdated, but it is still a good beginner camera. That is if you're looking for a SLR.
You could also look in to a Nikon D40.
But i'm fairly positive you can find "Point and shoot" for way less.
Also depends on what you plan to do, or use the camera for.
As always, I'm going to recommend the Canon. And for the first time I finally got to actually use a Nikon D40 of my Uncle's and I can honestly say I didn't like it. Maybe because I'm really used to canon controls though.
Yeah I'm a big canon fan myself. I got a chance to use a Nikon and i didn't like it.
Would you prefer more control or more portability? (like having the camera in your pocket)
I see great point and shoots that can take good quality photos.
I use a point and shoot for most of my photography, it works just well enough even if I always have to edit it to get the quality better. I'm getting a Canon XSI soon enough because I want more control than what I currently have.

Have a D80 and am loving it.
D40 is definately your best option, it's a great camera, don't listen to canon fags, i've tried both brands with various models they are both on the same level. Especially with entry level cameras.

uh
Okay, D40 or 350D v:v:v
My vote has to go to a D40 or something from Olympus.
Canons break down too easily...
Sorry for taking time to reply. I'm looking for portability. Almost every time I'm out I tend to see something that always makes me wish I had a camera with me. I think I'll be going for the D40 seeing as it seems to be the preferred choice.

I'd get the Canon XSI, it's like the D40 but it has way more features. Sadly I'm still saving up for it myself.

I found that quite silly. :sax:

That is beyond his price range at this moment.
Also i own a Xsi.

Well I know that, just saying. But I might actually change my mind and get the Canon 50d instead though, and the XSI isn't really bad if he decides that he wants a camera that will last him a long while.
EOS1000D is pretty decent.
Cheap too, i have one. I love it.
Fuji F200EXR, Canon SD990IS, SX10 IS, G10.

I have a Canon EOS 50D, it's a good camera, but way above the 300 dollar limit.
I would suggest just getting a point and shoot camera for now. You can always add depth of field, etc in photoshop. That way you get practice at photography and editing. Once you get a point and shoot you can start saving up for a good SLR camera.
edit:
This site has some Digital SLR cameras used for under 300.

and here are some nice used Point and shoot cameras for cheap.

i have a nikon d70s, i got it used off craigslist, and it works great, i like it better than the d40, you prolly wont be able to get it new cause i dont think they make it anymore, but just throwin that option in there.
a pink camera
It'll definitely be a point and click. I've already got a grasp of some things in Photoshop so it shouldn't be a problem. Highly considering going for this Canon Powershot (it's the cheapest): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/580525-REG/Canon_2668B001_PowerShot_A1000_IS_Digital.html

Don't get a point and shoot, you'll regret that you didn't just save for a DSLR. There's quite a difference, and the over-all quality from DSLR's if used right can be amazing. Plus if you want to get into photography and just want to stick with a P&S that just gives us all a hint you really don't know what you're doing and half expect you to only stay on Auto mode.

Hence why I'm asking for help.
gast0r, that powershot you linked to is no longer available in B&H.
