Iceland's parliament has abolished its blasphemy laws, despite opposition from some of the country's churches.
A bill was put forward by the minority Pirate Party, which campaigns for internet and data freedom.
It came after the deadly attack the same month against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris.
The bill said it was "essential in a free society that the public can express themselves without fear of punishment".
As three members of the Pirate Party stood before parliament on Thursday, each said: "Je Suis Charlie", an expression used globally to express solidarity with the Charlie Hebdo victims.
Huh, I never knew Iceland was in the Blasphemy club along with Pakistan. Weird.
England still had a law against blasphemy until 2008, although it was likely unenforceable due to human rights laws

Also, apparently the Pirate Party is currently the #1 party in Iceland and might win the next election?

Can some Icelanders get in here pls

Only one MP voted against the bill, the law hasn't been used in 20 years yet a lot of old farts and hard christians are saying this will be the downfall of civilization while this is just further separation of church and state.
The pirate party is #1 but i believe that's just peoples anger at the current gov not because of the pirate parties policies and voters here flip flop between parties like crazy when elections come depending on what bullshit the parties promise but i guess that goes for most countries.
Iceland continues to get more and more of my respect as a country, I'd love to move to Iceland one day.
Norway recently abolished our blasphemy law as well.
Most of these laws aren't enforced and people don't really know that they exist.
Iceland just seems like a great country to live in, and it keeps getting better.
I really hope I'll be able to move there one day.
you guys want to move to iceland?
here's why you shouldn't according to this good man!

yeah, in winter there's fuckall sun and in summer aka now you won't get much darkness at all
My sleeping schedule results in me waking up at night and sleeping at day, anyway. I probably wouldn't notice a difference during the winter.
I wouldn't quite say I'd live in Iceland, but it'd be an amazing place to visit.

I find this amusing. You'd be surprised how many countries still have blasphemy laws.
One of these countries borders yours and it's not Mexico.
Thats why mums go to Iceland

Iceland's government is pretty cool to me since its parliament is one of the only two governmental organizations in the world (the other being the Jamtamót in Jämtland, Sweden) to have existed contiguously for the past thousand years, having been founded in the tenth century by fucking vikings. How awesome is that?

Didn't realize we still had blasphemy laws. Guess I'm supporting the Pirate Party more in the future :v:
