The Coast Guard said Wednesday that it was still searching for 11 people missing after an explosion and fire at a oil-drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico that left three critically injured. The Deepwater Horizon rig was listing in the Gulf of Mexico as rescuers sought the missing. The platform, operated by a contractor for BP, is part of a deep-offshore drilling boom seen as key to future U.S. output. The rig, about 41 miles off the Louisiana coast, is owned and operated by Transocean Ltd. and contracted to British oil major BP PLC. A spokesman for Transocean said most of the 126 people on board were safe. The Coast Guard said Wednesday afternoon that 11 were still missing. The rig was still burning and listing. The Coast Guard said it was using three helicopters, four cutters and an airplane in rescue operations. BP and Transocean emergency response vessels and a number of private vessels are also participating, Transocean said. "We are still in a search and rescue operation," Transocean spokesman Greg Panagos said. The Coast Guard was establishing a safety zone around the rig, restricting access to the area by air and sea. It was unclear what caused the blast, which happened at around 10 p.m. Transocean Vice President Adrian Rose said crews were performing routine work before the explosion and there were no signs of trouble, the Associated Press reported. Tuesday. Initial indications show that terrorism wasn't involved, the Coast Guard said.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704133804575197613591134990.html?mod=WSJ_WSJ_US_News_3
I'm not even going to bother with a pun, that's damned depressing.
that blows
I guess you could say an oil rig blew up.
The best pun is in the title...
Fucking hell, a convenient excuse to ramp up gas prices.
Fucking hell, a convenient excuse to ramp up gas prices.
I don't think i've ever heard you say anything optimistic. Be glad that the majority of the crew got off safely. Those things are pretty much floating gas tanks and the thing exploded.

Doesn't change the fact that their injuries and/or deaths are going to be exploited by the oil industry as an excuse to jack up prices and line their pockets despite the fact that one rig represents a fraction of a percent of the oil flowing into the US.
What a blow to the industry.
I guess you could say an oil rig blew up.
I guess you could say tacosheller doesn't read the news enough to know what happens after this But seriously, I don't think there are any appropriate puns on this one..
Think of the positive side. Maybe this'll raise awareness towards nuclear energy.

Appropriate? There was a thread were a 9 year old kid got decapitated and there were puns everywhere. There are no limits here.

Glad to hear most of the crew got off safely, let's just hope the god damn gas prices don't hike up.
Wasn't this already posted? http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=927292
I don't think this is likely to be an immediate rise, it's just one station that wasn't really a major producer. The problem is if this was a special case, if this station was in a special group and this sets them back because of safety or other risks. If it appears that these stations are dangerous or economically risky, say goodbye to the entire area. As for the guys missing, the Ocean is a nasty place. I hope they are found within a couple of days, otherwise the search will be called off and they are assumed dead.
It's a dangerous job, that's why they get paid so much. They know the risks when they sign out, not to say that I don't care.
Sorry for the bump. I live in louisiana and its pretty damn sad that 11 people are missing. Its almost into the river, and my school is closed because they are being aware that the drinking water is contaminated with oil. [editline]02:11AM[/editline] :gonk:
Sad though it was, it would have been an incredible sight to watch it sink, judging from the photos. Any reason to fuck up oil production, to fuck up gasoline production, to gain a profit.
Very sad and all, until you find out how much they get paid to work on that.

I feel so bad for them now. Moments silence.
This just in, gas soars to $5per gallon for effecting 1% of the oil output.
