By Dan Weikel and Ari Bloomekatz, Los Angeles Times February 17, 2012 A small private plane carrying a load of marijuana strayed into President Obama's no-fly zone over Los Angeles on Thursday and was forced to land at Long Beach Airport after being intercepted by U.S. Air Force jet fighters, authorities said. The four-seat Cessna entered the restricted airspace about 11 a.m. as the president was flying from Orange County to Los Angeles aboard Marine One, a military helicopter provided for his use. Federal officials said the aircraft was never close enough to endanger Obama. Air traffic controllers tried repeatedly to contact the single-engine Cessna, authorities said, but the pilot did not respond. The plane was quickly intercepted by two F-16 fighters from March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, they said. After the Cessna touched down, federal agents and Long Beach police detained the pilot for questioning and found what law enforcement officials described as a large amount of marijuana on board the aircraft. The pilot was taken into custody by Long Beach police, but his identity and other details were not released because of the continuing drug investigation. Aircraft are typically prohibited from flying within 10 miles of any plane or helicopter carrying the president. Brian Leary, a spokesman for the United States Secret Service, which provides protection for the president, said the plane violated temporary restrictions that had been imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration for Obama's visit.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-obama-plane-20120217,0,82682.story I guess you could say he was flying a bit too high :v:
That guy has the worst damn luck
His own fault for not responding to their messages. lol
His own fault for not responding to their messages. lol
Drugrunners tend to do that.
I came in here expecting some guy that was out flying and happened to end up in the president's no fly zone (it moves with the president so if his plane overtakes you you're technically in violation of that order even if you didn't know he'd be flying there).
So had he simply replied and moved out of the area no one would know about the fact he was flying drugs about? Why do criminals not have common sense.
Being intercepted by jet fighters would be scary as fuck.
They would probably shoot past the little plane at hundreds of miles an hour while the pilot is dazed and confused as to what just happened.
It's possible to slow down to 220 kmh with a f16 and cesna models past 1970s seem to travel roughly the same speed at best.
How unfortunate.
To be fair, he was most likely shitting his pants already due to his knowledge of carrying a huge wad of marijuana. Fear makes people do the strangest things. Air traffic control probably told him to respond - out of the blue - whilst not stating the reason why. I doubt they'd say "Please respond, you're near the President" because if in fact he was attempting to harm the president, they wouldn't let him know. So yeah, poor guy.
I bet Obama will have a field day after this.. (It's all a big plot to make it seem like the guy got arrested, but it's really a secret shipment of high-grade greenery to the prez. The jetfighters were just there to make it seem real and provide suspense.)
