COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho (AP) -- A Washington state man faces felony marijuana trafficking charges after an officer found 3.3 pounds of marijuana wrapped up as Christmas gifts during a traffic stop in northern Idaho.
Jason D. Palmer, 36, of Springdale, Wash., was arrested Dec. 22 as he returned from a trip to Montana, where he had been visiting family, the Coeur d'Alene Press (http://bit.ly/uj4XeZ ) reported Thursday.
Kootenai County sheriff's officials said Palmer was stopped east of Coeur d'Alene because his vehicle was repeatedly changing lanes and following other drivers too closely. The officer said he smelled marijuana as he approached the vehicle.
"When I made contact at the window, the odor increased its potency," the deputy wrote in his report.
Palmer told the officer he was a medical marijuana cardholder and had a small amount of "medicine" in the vehicle.
"I asked him what was in the presents and he stated some `sweaters,'" the deputy wrote.
A drug-sniffing dog indicated the packages contained drugs and officers opened them, court records said.
Deputies also seized $800 in cash Palmer had with him.
Palmer's 12- and 14-year-old sons, who were in the vehicle with him, face charges of frequenting. The boys were arrested because deputies believed they had knowledge of the presence of drugs, court records said.
A phone message left for prosecuting attorney Barry McHugh, seeking information on the charges the children faced, was not immediately returned.
Palmer has been released after posting a $20,000 bond and a preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 13, court records said. The judge ordered a public defender be appointed for Palmer.
A phone listing for Palmer in Springdale, Wash., could not be located. He works at a hydroponics supply store in north Spokane.
Poor guy, what an awesome present.
That would've been a bad ass present.
that cop ruined christmas :(
what a grinch
The cops arrested his 12- and 14-year-old kids because they probably knew the drugs were there? Wow.
Also, fuck yeah Washington! Where other states get tons of police brutality, murder, and child rapists, the most we get that breaks headlines is people getting arrested for pot. :v:
Charging a 12 year old for being in a car with weed. Stay classy guys.
can you even arrest children
Arrest them, dunno about holding them for longer than 24 hours
You got what you deserved, criminal scum.
Boil him in hot oil for his crimes, his children too, they were clearly accomplices.

is this a joke?
Involving 2 minors is fucking stupid and is entirey uncalled for. Kids aren't going to rat on dad sorry.
I remember when I used to smoke pot I'd take great care in killing the smell. I used all sorts of deodorants, sprays, and what not to mask the odor on me, in my car, in my room, etc.
Occasionally I'd ask a friend "You can't smell anything right?" and he'd say "Dude, I could tell what KIND of pot you have been smoking from the smell before you even walked in".
Pot smokers almost never understand how strong the smell is, probably the way drinkers never realize how much their breath smells like alcohol.

The charges will probably not hold up in court.
fucking assholes knew there was marijuana in the car and didn't do shit about it instead of ratting out their parents. imo they deserve their punishment
actually that kind of reminds me of 1984 when parents are afraid of their kids because their kids are bound to get them into trouble for having 'unpopular' opinions, and the parents are arrested and killed
DEATH PENALTY FOR ALL OF THE CRIMINALS INVOLVED
Knowing America, if the constitution didn't complicate things we would already have legislation in place making it obligatory for officers to immediately employ lethal force upon anybody found to be possessing drugs along with anyone who's with them whether they're directly or indirectly involved, followed by execution warrants being filed for their entire extended family.
never gonna happen so don't even debate this
well since about half of teenagers smoke weed at this point I'd say when this generation is in office there will be a pretty good chance of it happening
3 fucking pounds though?
never gonna happen so don't even debate this
Prop 19 (Legalization of marijuana in California) got 46.5% yes in 2010. I think it's highly likely within 5~ it will be legalized, younger people are getting old enough to vote every day
fuck the police, shitheads like this busting teenagers for drugs when the real ones in the field pass away because they have the balls to fight actual crime

Mmmm, as much as Washington is a pretty chill place to live, our record is far from flawless. In fact, it isn't that good.
