3D support for newer Radeon graphics chips, better use of power saving features offered by the latest hardware and numerous enhancements to KVM and Btrfs are some of the outstanding items among the many thousands of changes undertaken for the latest kernel version. Various other improvements should also make Linux 2.6.32 more reactive and as a result, feel faster.
Hightlights
The kernel and its Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) will now offer 3D support and kernel-based mode setting (KMS) for AMD's series R600 and R700 GPUs. These are used in the Radeon series 2000, 3000 and 4000 models – which includes most of the Radeon graphics cards sold in the past couple of years as well as various AMD series 700 motherboard chip-sets. For the 3D support and KMS to function, however, suitable (developer) versions of Libdrm and Mesa 3D as well as Radeon graphics drivers for X.org need to be installed. Compiling this software stack is a task for advanced users – the recently released Fedora 12 already has everything needed, post install only the experimental Mesa support must be added from the repositories.
Btrfs, the experimental "next generation file system for Linux" can now write at more than 1 GB per second on fast hardware and now matches XFS for speed on our test system.

Kernel testers can now use the new 'localmodconfig' make target to, relatively simply, create a kernel configuration attuned to the distribution and hardware being used, and which does not compile any unneeded modules. This uses the configuration file for the currently running kernel and deactivates all modules which are not loaded in the kernel when it is run.

The USB 3.0 drivers integrated with 2.6.31 now operate smoothly due to various changes made in 2.6.32 – some of the relevant patches have also been incorporated into the series 2.6.31 stable kernels to improve these kernels' USB 3.0 support. The thinkpad-acpi driver has been given a major overhaul – among the improvements are the support of ThinkPads with a more recent generation of firmware ("second-gen firmware") and better userspace coordination for controlling volume and brightness via hotkeys.
Anybody tested out Direct Rendering Manager?
I've been all over the R600 3D/KMS since before 2.6.32's merge window opened son. :smug:

Currently on 2.6.33's DRM but with a 2.6.32 base.

I've also heard it'll set up the virtual terminal resolution properly so you don't have to specify it as a boot option in GRUB
Awesome!

Yep, that's something KMS does.
