Spain has invited Britain to share sovereignty of Gibraltar, in a move which would allow the territory to remain in the European Union. But Gibraltar's chief minister has rejected the proposal, saying the answer is "no way, Jose." The rocky headland on Spain's southern tip has long been the subject of a bitter row between London and Madrid, which wants to reclaim the area. Calls for joint sovereignty have increased following Brexit, with Spain arguing that the outcrop, ceded to Britain in 1713, should not miss out on EU benefits because of the UK's decision.
It's not that bad of a idea, allowing people from Gibraltar the choice to remain in the EU to a extent, it affects them more than it affects the UK. We should let them do a referendum in a similar vein as we did with the Falklands.
We should let them do a referendum in a similar vein as we did with the Falklands.
There was one in 2002, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar_sovereignty_referendum,_2002 Pretty overwhelming "no" back then. While a new referendum is certainly warranted with the brexit stuff, I doubt the result would change that much. There'd probably just be a new deal regarding free movement between Gibraltar and Spain.

Didn't Spain and the UK negotiate some free movement deal before Spain joined the EEC anyway?
"no way, Jose."
real mature, cunt
What is stopping Gibraltar negotiating on their own other than the EU kowtowing to Spain? If Bermuda can be part of the Caribbean Community without dragging the rest of the Overseas Territories in then it should be possible.
real mature, cunt
Is it more mature to stamp your feet every chance and make vague threats about taking back territory whilst holding similar territory on even shakier grounds? Spain whips their cock out about this every year or so and expects a hummer whilst offering fuck all in return, no wonder they are a fucking mess. Oh and the Spanish foreign minister is actually called Jose.
Out of sheer curiosity, does anyone know how far the Gibraltar sovereignty extends in that image up there? Is there more land or is it basically the port and a bit of inland? Sense of scale with smaller territories is always interesting like with Singapore or Brunei.

If you look at the pictures in the OP closely you can see that straight bit of water. That water is British territory and the port on the far side is Spanish.
I wonder if Spain/EU will use Gibraltar free movement as leverage in the Brexit negotiations.
I thought that Spain had already threatened that back in the pre-poll stages?
I thought that Spain had already threatened that back in the pre-poll stages?
iirc they actually imposed a €20 or €30 border crossing fee the last time they asked for Gibraltar back and we said no. They scrapped it pretty fast due to it not just affecting Gibraltans but affecting the Spanish too.
:snip: fuck me I can't read
Seeing as Gibraltar voted to stay within the EU to the tune of 90%, I think there might be a dip in enthusiasm for them remaining part of the UK. Depends what they value more, I suppose.
But Gibraltar's chief minister has rejected the proposal, saying the answer is "no way, Jose."
hahaha 10/10
Spain has more chance of an independent Catalonia than shared sovereignty with Gibraltar.
I swear every year the same news pops around, either this or when someone decides to ram another boat for any idiotic reason. Same with the "Spain wants to fuse with Portugal and create a new country". Is tiring, TBH.
real mature, cunt
Got a better idea, why don't you put your army on Gibraltar and claim it. Then the next week we can watch as you become embroiled in a European war against us and our allies, all that blood just for your precious little Gibraltar that you're demanding.
your precious little Gibraltar that you're demanding.
yeah i hope finland finally does it too
Please, keep up your demands. I am sure our foreign ministers are listening intently. I personally hope nothing is done and Gibraltar gets to choose if the time comes.
Piss off dagos or we will give weapons to Catalonia and the Basque Country.
